Lakewood
Colonial Revivals and New Traditional homes on half-acre lots
Though properties are close together in Lakewood, the subdivision looks out onto sprawling patches of farmland to the south. “You’re not going to get much land, but it feels like you’re in a rural atmosphere with the views of farmland and the mountains,” Randall says. Houses were built between the mid-1980s and early 2000s and usually sit on half-acre lots decorated with neat landscaping and rounded shrubbery. New Traditional properties with tan stone facades and gabled roofs usually sell between $400,000 and $500,000. Colonial Revivals are often priced between $580,000 and $700,000.Golf courses, hiking trails and pickleball courts near Lakewood
Locals often drive to hiking trails and green spaces throughout the Valley, but there are opportunities for outdoor recreation close by. The Lakeview Golf Club is about a mile east of Lakewood. The public course has three 9-hole courses that wind through part of the Crossroads Farm subdivision, so enthusiasts may play up to 27 holes of golf. The Rockingham Park at the Crossroads, which has a large playground with a zipline and a 1-mile walking loop, is about 2 miles northeast. The park has baseball diamonds and soccer fields for youth sports games, and a new recreational center with an indoor track and athletic courts will be added to the park by 2025. Locals drive about 4 miles northwest to play pickleball or walk their dogs on paved, shady trails at Purcell Park, or drive 20 miles east to the Swift Run Gap Entrance of Shenandoah National Park to find longer, rocky hikes to waterfalls or mountain peaks. Shenandoah National Park’s Skyline Drive is peppered with scenic overlooks offering expansive green valley views framed by the Blue Ridge Mountains. In the winter, residents go tubing or skiing at Massanutten Resort, which is only about 10 miles northeast of Lakewood.Seasonal community events
The Lakewood Homeowners’ Association has $15 annual household dues so that it can organize block parties and neighborhood picnics for its members. The Lakewood Lunch Bunch meets at a local restaurant monthly to catch up. Kids pedal along the streets in red, white and blue attire during the neighborhood’s annual 4th of July bike parade; residents enjoy popsicles afterward. In October, neighbors declutter in time for the community fall yard sale, which is organized in collaboration with the nearby subdivisions of Barrington and Kentshire Estates. In early December, families gather in their driveways to meet Santa as he travels through the neighborhood on a firetruck from the Hose Company No. 4, handing out toys. Mrs. Claus and the Grinch often accompany the festive entourage. Later in December, carolers don colorful holiday necklaces and Santa hats and walk through Lakewood singing seasonal tunes.Spotswood High School earns an A-minus

Weekend mornings bring large crowds to spots like Clementine Café, which serves pancakes and breakfast burritos in a vibrant atmosphere decorated with colorful murals. There’s also Magpie Diner, a contemporary joint in a renovated 20th-century tire station with minimal, black-and-white finishings where residents enjoy egg sandwiches, breakfast bowls and specialty flavored lattes. For dinner, Bella Luna Wood-Fired Pizza offers build-your-own pies in a warmly lit environment, while Jack Brown’s Beer and Burger Joint is a go-to for baskets of fries and burgers with innovative toppings; the Cobra Kai has cream cheese and pickled jalapeños.Port Republic Road connects residents to Interstate 81
