Eastern Mennonite University sits at Park View’s core
Founded in 1917, Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg grew throughout the following decades, with Park View becoming the school’s surrounding residential pocket by the midcentury. Today, hickory and sycamore trees dot the 93-acre campus, home to nearly 1,500 students and over 50 degree programs focused on liberal arts and Mennonite teachings. “You don’t have to be Mennonite to go to EMU, let alone live in the neighborhood, but the school and the religion definitely influence the area,” says Craig Anders, a real estate agent with Cottonwood Commercial, who is also an EMU alum. The Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community spans 40 acres across Virginia Avenue on the neighborhood’s eastern edge. Herm, the school’s blue lion mascot, goes from soccer games to church services during EMU’s Homecoming, held at the end of every October. Breakfast spots and Mennonite-affiliated thrift stores are along Mount Clinton Pike, where locals can also hop on the 2-and-a-half-mile Northend Greenway, ending in downtown Harrisonburg.

Single-family homes, a Mennonite retirement village and student housing
Park View’s winding, hilly roads are lined with homes built between the 1960s and ‘90s. Wood fencing often encloses the backyards of vinyl and red-brick ranch styles with four bedrooms. Contemporary styles on Lincolnshire Drive sit on half-to-one-acre lots covered in eastern white pine and white willow trees. Smith Avenue has New Traditional single families and duplexes with one-car garages. Buying in the neighborhood typically costs between $250,000 and $550,000, a range similar to Harrisonburg home’s average $275,000 selling price. The Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community has beige and brick apartment complexes, Craftsman-style townhouses for independent living and a few group homes providing nursing care. Several EMU-owned apartment complexes are along Parkwood Drive, as students are required to live on campus for three years. Anders says most students move to off-campus apartments closer to downtown Harrisonburg for their senior year.

Faith-based classes and liberal arts degrees at Eastern Mennonite University
Sidewalks stretch across Eastern Mennonite University’s quad, connecting numerous red-brick buildings. The private school offers bachelor's degrees in fields like nursing, computer science and marketing. It also has a seminary school with reverend training and a master’s degree program in peacebuilding, a pillar of the Mennonite faith. “It’s not a big school, so it’s usually really quiet, except for homecoming weekend,” Anders says. A choral performance in Leham Auditorium kicks off the celebration. Fans fill metal bleachers at the turf field for women’s field hockey and men’s soccer games on Saturday. After the games, food trucks, bounce houses and a bonfire spread across the front lawn of Aletheia Church, where a Sunday morning service ends the weekend. “A bunch of alumni and parents visit for the whole weekend and non-students from around Harrisonburg will come, too.” Unaffiliated from campus ministry, Park View Mennonite Church is a half-mile north of campus on College Avenue in a ranch-style building with a daycare program.

Parks along the Northend Greenway
Locals will pass a few Harrisonburg parks as they bike, jog or walk along the asphalt Northend Greenway, including the 6-acre Morrison Park, which has four blue and green pickleball courts. Basketballs bounce on the rubber courts at Ralph Sampson Park, named for Harrisonburg local and former NBA player. Though it’s not near the trail, 74-acre Hillandale Park, the city’s largest green space, is only 4 miles south of the neighborhood. Hiking routes include dirt trails stretching across pin oak and red maple tree forests, and wooden bridges crossing shallow streams. A green and beige playground with monkey bars, twisty slides and a plastic rock climbing wall sits atop woodchips towards the park’s entrance. Offering 23 skiing, snowboarding and tubing runs, Massanutten Resort is 16 miles southeast of Park View. Shenandoah National Park and its 500 miles of chestnut tree-shaded hiking trails are 25 miles in the same direction.

Mennonite thrift stores and local coffee shops on Mount Clinton Pike
Students and locals can browse gently used goods at the side-by-side Gift & Thrift and Booksavers of Virginia, where a portion of proceeds are donated to Mennonite-associated charities. House plants, black leather couches and bar-top tables fill Merge Coffee Company, a contemporary-style, Harrisonburg-local chain. Black and white photos of Mexican celebrities adorn the walls of Casa Gallardo Fajita Factory, known for seafood tacos and jumbo margaritas. A Food Lion grocery store anchors the Harmony Square Shopping Center on Virginia Avenue, also home to the Park View Federal Credit Union and a Dairy Queen Grill & Chill. Pizzerias, breweries and coffeehouses are in Italianate-style storefronts in downtown Harrisonburg, about 2-and-a-half miles southeast of Park View via the greenway or by car.

A quick drive to Interstate 81
“Students walk around campus, but most people drive to get anywhere other than the school,” Anders says. Interstate 81 is about 4 miles southeast of the neighborhood, and another 60-mile drive north leads to Winchester. An equidistant drive south on the highway leads to Charlottesville, where locals will find the closest airport, the Charlottesville Albemarle Airport. Several Harrisonburg Public Transportation bus stops are across EMU’s campus and on residential streets. The nearest hospital, Sentara RMH Medical Center, is 6 miles south of Park View on Health Campus Drive.
