Easy access to shopping, highways and the Blue Ridge Mountains
About 2 miles east of downtown Harrisonburg, Reherd Acres is a townhouse suburb brimming with Blue Ridge Mountain views, commercial convenience and easy highway access. Car repair shops and Mexican and Italian restaurants dot U.S. Route 33 in the western part of the neighborhood. A dog park and youth soccer complex are on Smithland Road, adjacent to Interstate 81, spanning Reherd Acres’ eastern edge. Numerous shopping strips and the 26,000-square-foot Valley Mall are south of the Route 33 and I-81 interchange in a retail cluster known as the Route 33 Shopping Corridor. “Reherd Acres is really quiet and almost entirely residential,” says Kozhin Ahmad, a Realtor with Harman Realty, who has sold several homes in the area. “But the shopping corridor is the main big-box shopping area for all of Harrisonburg, and being near that is a big draw.” Locals can also quickly drive to James Madison University and mountainous recreational hubs like the 6,000-acre Massanutten Resort, offering day passes and season passes for skiing, hiking and golfing.

A townhouse suburb with a James Madison University apartment complex
Reherd Acres’ winding roads and cul-de-sacs have townhouses built between the 1980s and early 2000s. Concrete steps lead to mismatched vinyl and red-brick Colonial Revival-style units along Meadowlark Drive. The Liberty Square subdivision has pastel-painted Queen Anne styles on sidewalk-lined streets. Two-bedroom townhouses in Reherd Acres can start at $200,000, while three-bedroom units may reach $300,000. Single-family housing includes 1950s ranch styles on quarter-acre lots, often shaded by oak and white dogwood trees. Ornamental shrubs dot the front lawns of four-bedroom Colonial Revivals and classical styles from the early 2000s. Buying a single-family house typically costs between $300,000 and $450,000, a range slightly higher than a Harrisonburg home’s average $275,000 selling price. The North 38 apartment complex on Meridian Circle has several beige and brown buildings with three-to-four-bedroom units and a free shuttle service to nearby James Madison University. “There’s just the one apartment complex for student housing,” Ahmad says. “Other than that, it’s mainly non-students that live here.”
Townhomes in Reherd Acres can have up to three floors of living space.

Big-box retailers in the U.S. Route 33 Shopping Corridor
The neighborhood’s portion of four-lane Route 33 has several conveniences, like a Food Lion grocery store and the Rolling Hills Antique Mall, which sells vintage glassware, postcards and pottery. A metal green awning shades the patio outside Ciro’s Lasagna House, serving food like New York-style pizza, subs and pasta. Silver tables fill the pink and purple-painted interior of Paletería La Mexicana, known for chamoy-covered mangoes and sherbet flavors like blackberry and pineapple. Gold domes sit atop The Islamic Association of the Shenandoah Valley’s beige brick mosque on Country Club Road. A Walmart Supercenter, Home Depot and Barnes & Noble anchor the Harrisonburg Crossing in the Route 33 Shopping Corridor, also home to fast-casual restaurants like Chipotle and Five Guys. Locals can grab a pretzel from Auntie Anne’s and walk around the cream-colored tiled floors of Valley Mall, stopping at stores like Target, Dick’s Sporting Goods and Old Navy. Breweries, bicycle shops and museums line red-brick sidewalks in nearby downtown Harrisonburg.

Children can attend Smithland Elementary School, graded a C by Niche, and Skyline Middle School, which earns a C-plus. They may continue to Rocktown High School, which will open in August 2024 and has yet to be graded by Niche. Its contemporary-style glass and brick campus includes turf athletic fields, a grass quad and numerous student common spaces. Victory Baptist Church on Alleghany Avenue has a kindergarten through 12th grade academy. Bluestone and red tiled roof buildings make up James Madison University’s 721-acre campus, about 2 miles south of Reherd Acres. The Massanutten Resort is just a quick drive away
Every fall and spring, referee whistles and parents with camping chairs fill the Smithland Road Athletic Complex, which has four grass soccer fields and a turf football field for youth leagues. Green chain-link fencing surrounds Smithland Road Dog Park, split into two sections for large and small dogs. Rubber tires, small boulders and fake fire hydrants dot the patchy grass and woodchip terrain. A beige and green playground with slides, monkey bars and a plastic rock climbing wall sits atop the hilly, 31-acre Ralph Sampson Park, a mile west of Reherd Acres. Named for Harrisonburg local and former NBA player, the park has several blue and green rubber basketball courts popular for pickup games. About 13 miles east, Massanutten Resort offers year-round Blue Ridge Mountain activity. Costing $450 per person, a gold card provides unlimited access to the indoor and outdoor waterpark, two rolling 18-hole golf courses and 30 miles of chestnut and red oak tree-forested trails. A single-person winter pass starts at $500, allowing access to the 23 skiing, snowboarding and tubing runs, with the highest peak reaching nearly 3,000 feet high. Every Wednesday during the summer, white tents pack the south parking lot for the Massanutten Farmers Market, which is free for anyone to enter and buy goods like locally sourced honey, elderberries and artisan bread. Hiking trails alongside waterfalls and RV campgrounds are about 20 miles east of the neighborhood at Shenandoah National Park.
