Urban Hartford neighborhood with historic institutions
Bordering downtown Hartford on the west, Asylum Hill was named after what was once called the Asylum for the Deaf and Dumb, which stood in the neighborhood throughout the 19th century. Although the facility is now the American School for the Deaf in West Hartford, The Asylum Hill neighborhood retains its name and is home to several other major Hartford institutions. These include cultural attractions like the Mark Twain House, corporate headquarters like Aetna and historic houses of worship like Asylum Hill Congregational Church. These landmarks, coupled with an eclectic mix of modern apartments and historic homes, create a unique urban landscape with a diverse mix of longtime residents and newer immigrants.

Residences scattered among businesses and facilities
Pockets of residential buildings sit next to this urban neighborhood’s businesses and institutions. Homes in Asylum Hill include some single- and multi-family homes built in the early 1900s, including traditional and Victorian-style residences. Wrought-iron fences surround some properties, and houses often have private driveways for parking. The majority of Asylum Hill residents are renters, and the neighborhood has several brick apartment complexes built in the mid-20th century, including some dedicated to low-income housing. “The neighborhood has that kind of hodge-podgey feel, where there are a lot of newer apartment buildings mixed in with businesses and homes that were once single families but have now been converted to multi-families,” says Brett Freiburger, local history librarian at West Hartford Public Library. Condos usually cost between $65,000 and $100,000 for a one-bedroom unit, while houses cost between $200,000 and $400,000, depending on their size and condition.

Aetna headquarters, historic churches and nearby dining

Parkville Market is a popular Hartford food hall within walking distance for some Asylum Hill residents. Here, locals can choose from over two dozen restaurants and check out vendor markets and live music, among other regular events. For groceries, Key Food Supermarkets is just south of the neighborhood.
Major health insurance providers Aetna and The Hartford have their corporate headquarters in Asylum Hill, and St. Francis Hospital is also located in the neighborhood. Although these are major regional employers, Freiburger says most white-collar workers commute from the suburbs or other parts of Hartford like the West End. “There are not a lot of people who work at The Hartford and Aetna who walk to work,” he says.
Immanuel Congregational Church, Asylum Hill Congregational Church and the Cathedral of Saint Joseph serve as architectural and cultural landmarks in the neighborhood. “The churches now, from my experience, serve an older population that’s more diverse,” Freiburger says.

A community garden and events downtown

The Asylum Hill neighborhood association has monthly board meetings and committees that focus on neighborhood priorities like economic development and quality of life. The organization also focuses on inclusion for its diverse residents; for example, it started a Welcoming and Culture committee to help Asian and African immigrants moving to the neighborhood adjust to life in Hartford.
Additionally, Asylum Hill residents are about a mile from major event venues in downtown Hartford such as the XL Center, which hosts concerts and the Hartford Wolf Pack minor league hockey games, and Dunkin’ Park, home to the Yard Goats minor league baseball team.
Public transportation and walking downtown
Residents can walk to schools, parks, restaurants and more within the neighborhood, and downtown Hartford is less than a mile east. For drivers, Interstate 84 bounds the neighborhood on the south, going into downtown and across the state. CTtransit buses also service several stops through Asylum Hill.
The construction of Interstate 84 in the 1960s cut off Asylum Hill from its neighboring residential neighborhood, Frog’s Hollow. “There are tons of parking lots that don’t get used anymore. Putting [the highway] underground is one of those things they’ve talked about helping bridge these neighborhoods together,” Freiburger says. Proponents of putting the highway underground believe reconnecting neighborhoods like these would create more cohesion in Hartford and encourage new development by removing surface lots and freeing up valuable land.
