Diversity, downtown and Trinity College
Behind the Rocks takes its curious name from the basalt ridge running along the neighborhood’s eastern border, which once served as the location of a quarry. But with the growth of the residential community and neighboring Trinity College, the quarry was converted into a public park, and in that sense, Behind the Rocks left the rocks behind. Today, residents have a variety of reasons for living in the neighborhood, from the area’s cultural diversity to its excellent location within Hartford. “Behind the Rocks, and the South End in general, tends to be more appealing than neighborhoods in the North End in that it has a lot more diversity and culture,” says Norm Hamilton, a Realtor with NextHome who has been selling properties in the area for almost 20 years. “Homes also hold property values better than in the North End. From a real estate point of view, you can see the difference.”

Sidewalks can be found all around the neighborhood, and streets are wide enough for parking on either side. Single-family homes often follow bungalow and Cape Cod designs, with vinyl siding. Prices range between $150,000 and $300,000. Three-story, multi-family Colonial Revival homes also feature prominently on the market, with anywhere from four to 12 bedrooms. Some offer balconies and resemble detached townhouses. Typically, they sell for between $250,000 and $400,000. There are also several apartment complexes in the neighborhood, and given its proximity to Trinity College, many students choose to live in Behind the Rocks.

A Walmart and several fast-food joints can be found at Charter Oak Marketplace shopping center on the neighborhood’s west side. There are also a lot of Latin American restaurants in the area, such as Piolin. “Piolin’s been in the area since before I even came to Connecticut,” Hamilton says. “It’s one of the places I go, and take clients to. I like the pollo a la brasa. It’s like rotisserie chicken with Peruvian spices. And I like the chaufa de pollo, which is like chicken fried rice.” Further down the road is Coyote Flaco, which serves up Mexican staples like tacos de birria and tamales.
