Rooted in the past but growing with the times
Hartford is Connecticut's capital city, nicknamed the "insurance capital of the world." However, the area offers more than just office buildings and insurance companies. Sheldon Charter Oak is a neighborhood in the southern end of Hartford that has strong ties to the past, beautiful parks and access to every convenience the city has to offer. Homes are renovated under the vision of The Coalition to Strengthen the Sheldon Charter Oak Neighborhood, the neighborhood association. "The neighborhood association is instrumental in ensuring the neighborhood is meeting the needs of many people," said Maria Hagan of William Raveis Real Estate. Many live in the area because of its location and affordability. "It's as close to the action of Hartford as you can be without really being in the thick of it," Hagan says.

A short drive to the dining of downtown
Thomas Hooker was a Congregational leader and founded the Connecticut Colony. Nicknamed the "Father of Connecticut," his name can be seen all over the state's buildings, streets and businesses. Thomas Hooker Brewery is the most notable namesake and has a location in Sheldon Charter Oak at the old Colt Armory, which was converted into apartment units. Bordered by windows, the brewery has notable beers on tap, bar bites and board games for patrons to enjoy while dining in. Proximity to downtown is great for those wanting a fancy date night location, and there are many authentic restaurants scattered around serving the highly diverse population of Hartford. "A major downside is a lack of grocery stores around the area," Hagan says. "But that is a problem all over Hartford." While no major shopping centers are in the neighborhood, convenience stores and small grocers are within a short walk or drive.

Colt Park is an active hub that is tied to the past
Spanning 114 acres and taking up nearly a third of the Sheldon Charter Oak is Colt Park. Part of the National Register of Historic Places, it is a community hub for Hartford, giving a quiet pocket of space in the busy capital. Baseball and softball diamonds and multi-use fields are busy with adult kickball and flag football leagues during the warmer months, and a playground and splash pad keep the little ones occupied and cooled off when they're not in school. Across the highway and bordering the Connecticut River, Charter Oak Landing provides a boat launch and a waterfront pavilion with panoramic views of downtown.

Ranging from $125,000 to $425,000, the historic brick buildings show their age in their untouched exteriors but sometimes have revamped, renovated interiors. "It's a mixture of old-world architecture with new amenities," Hagan says. There are a few single-family houses along the industrial streets, but they're turning into duplexes and multi-unit dwellings. Sidewalks are standard and necessary for those walking through the neighborhood because of the busy streets often filled with commuters and emergency vehicles heading to Hartford Hospital.
