Historic Little Italy
While holding on to its Italian roots, South End has also grown to incorporate other international cuisines. Also known as "Little Italy," this Hartford neighborhood has become one of the city's top culinary destinations. The neighborhood saw most of its growth after the First World War, with the area along Franklin Avenue donning the title of Little Italy. Since then, the area has become a melting pot of residents with diverse ancestries, which is now reflected in the variety of dining options. But there's much more to do in the area than just eat. Other draws include the expansive Goodwin Park, and the neighborhood is conveniently located just over 3 miles from downtown. Amenities such as public transportation, major highway access and the Hartford hospital are all nearby, as well.
Melting pot of dining options
Franklin Avenue is home to a strip of restaurants that are a veritable world tour of cuisine — stop by La Fonda Bar and Restaurante for Colombian dishes, Tico's Place for Puerto Rican fare, or Vista Alegre for Peruvian food. And for residents just looking for a grinder and a refreshing drink, Franklin Giant Grinder and Pizza Shop is close by. Head to First and Last Tavern on Maple Avenue for tasty Italian food, where the staff has been slinging pizza and serving beer since 1936.
Tico's Place in the South End offers a delightful blend of Latin and American food.
Enjoy a well-established pub offering a relaxed atmosphere and Italian dishes in the South End.

Classic homes and rental properties
“There’s an array of housing styles throughout the South End,” says Mollie Abend, longtime resident of Hartford and Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway Homeservices. “Some homes tend to be smaller, but there’s a great range in prices and sizes. It’s also close to downtown which has so much to do, like the beautiful parks and theater spaces.” The area has a blend of condos, townhouses, and homes for rent and plenty of options for sale as well. The area is primarily residential, and most of the businesses in the neighborhood are located on Franklin Avenue. South End's streets are home to vinyl-sided ranchers, brick Cape Cods, duplexes with porches and decks, and Colonial homes. Potential residents will see that there's plenty of pride of ownership in the properties around the neighborhood, with many homes having new fixtures or interior features. Real estate prices can range anywhere from the low 200s into the mid $400,000 range, which includes properties in multi-family buildings.

They are businesses that have been here for years. This neighborhood is still in the stone age for many of its businesses but all in all it is ok.
