Classic homes and rental properties
“There’s an array of housing styles throughout the South End,” says Mollie Abend, longtime resident of Hartford and Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway Homeservices. “Some homes tend to be smaller, but there’s a great range in prices and sizes. It’s also close to downtown which has so much to do, like the beautiful parks and theater spaces.” The area has a blend of condos, townhouses, and homes for rent and plenty of options for sale as well. The area is primarily residential, and most of the businesses in the neighborhood are located on Franklin Avenue. South End's streets are home to vinyl-sided ranchers, brick Cape Cods, duplexes with porches and decks, and Colonial homes. Potential residents will see that there's plenty of pride of ownership in the properties around the neighborhood, with many homes having new fixtures or interior features. Real estate prices can range anywhere from the low 200s into the mid $400,000 range, which includes properties in multi-family buildings.
Goodwin Park
Head to Goodwin Park and hop in the pool to swim some laps. You can also run the length of the park's field or bounce to the basketball court to hoist up some threes or, if you're feeling bouncy, go for a slam dunk. The park also has a golf course with group clinics. The neighborhood is also close to Colt Park, an expansive 107-acre outdoor space with several sports fields and outdoor pools perfect for cooling off in the summer.Hartford Public Schools
Parents can enroll their children in district schools in the Hartford Public Schools, possibly starting at the James H. Naylor/CCSSU Leadership Academy, which has a C-minus Niche grade. Students might then attend Burr Middle School, followed by Bulkeley High School. Named after the first President of the National Baseball League, this school offers year-round sports programs and a Computer Science Pathway program that allows students to qualify for diplomas and certifications in computer networking, database design and more.
Getting to downtown
South End is about 3 miles from Downtown Hartford and easily accessible with Interstate 91 on the neighborhood's east side. There is also an abundance of bus stops along the neighborhood's main thoroughfares through CT transit.Melting pot of dining options
Franklin Avenue is home to a strip of restaurants that are a veritable world tour of cuisine — stop by La Fonda Bar and Restaurante for Colombian dishes, Tico's Place for Puerto Rican fare, or Vista Alegre for Peruvian food. And for residents just looking for a grinder and a refreshing drink, Franklin Giant Grinder and Pizza Shop is close by. Head to First and Last Tavern on Maple Avenue for tasty Italian food, where the staff has been slinging pizza and serving beer since 1936.
