Diverse residential neighborhood on Hartford's city line
Hartford's South West neighborhood, as its name suggests, is on the far southwestern end of the city, just across the city line from West Hartford and 3 miles south of downtown. The advent of the trolley line from this area into downtown during the 1800s first formed the neighborhood's residential landscape. Though the trolley line is now gone, the area still retains its character – and an exceptional Hartford landmark. "The Cedar Hill Cemetery is really that neighborhood's claim to fame," says Brett Freiburger, local history librarian at West Hartford Library. This 270-acre cemetery spans beyond South West's southern border, serving as a public space for contemplation, recreation and appreciation of the unique memorial sculptures. "But beyond that, it's mostly residential. It reminds me of parts of Boston; it's not a dense urban block, but it's a walkable neighborhood that's still in the city," he says.

Contemplation at Cedar Hill Cemetery and parks nearby
Cedar Hill Cemetery spans the neighborhood's southern border and has over 35,000 gravesites dating from the site's founding in 1864 to today. Famous landmarks include J.P. Morgan's pink granite grave and a towering granite pyramid at insurance executive Mark Howard's burial site. "Cedar Hill is an example of Victorian Cemetery Park Architecture," Freiburger says. "The whole park was designed for people to come and hang out. It's a place where you won't really be bothered."
The Cedar Hill Cemetery also hosts community events. In October, cemetery tour guides dress in period garb and tell tales of the site's "residents" for the seasonally appropriate Hallowed History Lantern Tour. During the warmer months, locals enjoy more lighthearted fun at the cemetery, such as free summer concerts on the grounds.
Right next door to the cemetery is the 237-acre Goodwin Park. Among many features, it's home to a 27-hole golf course, tennis courts, and three small ponds where people can cast a line during fishing season. Kids can also get out to play at Forster Heights Playground or Hyland Park, which has baseball fields, a basketball court and splash pad, and athletic facilities.

It was my parents choose to move to this area. This area of our current resisdence is better than where we use to live. We live in a house now instead of a roach/rat infested apartment and drive bys. I have learned that nothing is perfect and we should appreciate what we have instead of things we can not attain at the moment. There are always pros and cons to every situation you just have to take the good with the bad until you can get out of the situation you are in. That's why i work so hard in college to make sure that I get out and my future children have a better life. But when i get out i won't forget where i came from i will give my to my city.

A lot of police are visible, but they do take take quite sometime to get to the area they are called to. There are a bit of crimes taking place but that happens everywhere you go
