A village dressed in history
During the War of 1812, Fort Dearborn was attacked and abandoned – the few remaining survivors were guided to safety across Lake Michigan by Alexander Robinson. After the war had ended, it was Robinson who moved west, looking for a high point that wasn’t the marshy lands surrounding Lake Michigan. He settled in what is now known as Harwood Heights, a highly residential village that saw a huge population boom in the mid-1900s.
"A lot of people are drawn to the area by it's convenient location and amenities," says Al Giannini, a local real estate agent who has lived in the area for over 40 years. "You're just a short drive from O'Hare, and other means of transportation are easy to access, including the elevated train station and a few CTA stops. The property taxes here are also more tolerable than in the surrounding Chicago suburbs, largely due to the taxes collected from the big urban shopping centers that can be found in the community."

Quaint bungalows and modern traditional builds
Today, walking around the spacious streets will take walkers past vintage brick ranch-style homes and stately luxury homes alike. No matter the number of rooms needed in the house or desired amenities, there’s a greatly varied mix of stand-alone home styles that will fit the vision. Yard space is limited, with small, fenced-in back lots being most common, and the atmosphere is on the quieter side. The average listing price here is $375,000, but shoppers will find 800-square-foot bungalows in the lower $200,000s. The higher end of the market features five-bedroom modern traditional-style homes with 2,200 square feet and updated interiors.
