Ayer Village offers a green atmosphere and lower taxes in Haverhill, Massachusetts
Ayer Village is a lower-density neighborhood in Haverhill, Massachusetts, about 35 miles north of Boston on the New Hampshire border. “The location is desirable because it’s a little more rural, less dense with urban housing,” says Vivien Marcus, associate broker with Keller Williams. “It's a high quality of life. There’s more greenery: mature trees, parks to walk in, that kind of thing.” In addition to the atmosphere, residents benefit also benefits from local tax structures. “Haverhill has one of the lowest effective tax rates of any community on the north shore,” Marcus says. “Affordability is high here.”
A mix of styles in a secluded and forested atmosphere
Large, stately colonial designs on large lots with tall trees and wide lawns can be found along Village Woods Road, Fox Run Drive, and the smaller streets south of Broadway. Such homes can cost between $750,000 and $1.2 million. Modest ranch homes, half-story homes or smaller colonials can be found along the main drags. These may cost between $510,000 and $720,000. Homes feature off-street parking and sometimes have detached or attached garages. Sidewalks are rare, and more likely to be found in the secluded cul-de-sacs than along the narrow state highways and two-lane roads crisscrossing the area. Pockets of forest surround some properties, creating a secluded, almost rural atmosphere.

Unique public Montessori program among schooling options in Haverhill
Haverhill Public Schools scores a C-plus from Niche and is home to Hill View Montessori Charter Public School, which serves kindergarten through eighth grade and earns a C-minus from Niche. “Haverhill is one of the few communities in the state with a school like that,” Marcus says. “My daughter went there, and it set her up well for high school.” Other elementary schools nearby include Silver Hill Elementary School and Tilton Elementary School, which earn C-plus and B-minus grades, respectively. Students then move on to Cosentino Middle, which scores a C-plus, and Haverhill High School, which earns a B-minus.

Hiking trails abound around Crystal Lake and Tattersall Farms
Green space is abundant in this area, with several conservation areas for hiking near Crystal Lake. Crystal Lake Golf Club abuts John’s Woods at Tattersall Farms, another local hiking spot, and the farm itself has additional hiking areas, plus events and community garden plots. The 150-acre farm was left to the city when the last owner passed in 1999. Closer to downtown Haverhill, residents can head to Winnekenni Park to explore Winnekenni Castle, built in 1875, though the old stone building is closed for renovation as of this writing.

Dining near the New Hampshire border and in downtown Haverhill
Restaurants in or near Ayer Village include Sevmar Mediterranean Bistro, Pica’s Pub and Grill and Spring Restaurant, which serves Vietnamese cuisine. These are all near the New Hampshire border. Chain restaurants, a Target, and a Market Basket grocery are close to Interstate 495, no more than 5 miles from the neighborhood. In downtown Haverhill, residents can enjoy dinner at Tacos Lupita or BOSA Coastal Italian and wash it down with craft beer at The Tap Brewing Company, all while taking in views of the Merrimack River. People also pop over to New Hampshire for shopping. “They don’t have sales tax there,” Marcus says.

Farm events, art walks, poetry and River Ruckus on the Merrimack
Tattersall Farms hosts star gazing nights, planned hikes and agricultural demonstrations. Creative Haverhill, an arts nonprofit, hosts a biannual poetry series and an art walk through downtown. September brings the annual River Ruckus to the banks of the Merrimack, with live music, food vendors, fireworks and more. “There’s a lot of great stuff in this community,” Marcus says.

Interstate 495 and a train line connect Haverhill to the greater Boston area
Major roads here include Massachusetts Route 97, which runs through the neighborhood, and I-495. The Haverhill Train Station in downtown Haverhill is under 6 miles away, and residents can ride all the way to Boston. “People do commute to Boston,” Marcus says. “Housing is much more affordable as you move away from the city.” Boston’s Logan International Airport is about 35 miles away. Residents will likely want a car, as other than the train station, there’s not much in the way of public transit or walkability. Merrimack Medical Center is about 8 miles from the New Hampshire border, while Holy Family Hospital – Methuen is about 5 miles south.
Interstate 495 runs nearby the Ayer Village neighborhood in Haverhill, MA and provides access to the region and to Boston via I-93.
The Haverhill station is a near by transit option for those in Ayer Village and offers a 70-minute commuter train to downtown Boston.
