Accessibility and community in Central Bradford

Bordering the Merrimack River, Central Bradford sits less than a mile from downtown Haverhill and 36 miles from Boston, Massachusetts. Transportation and lower housing costs are a big draw to the area, as are the upgraded colonial and revival-style homes intermixed with townhouses and condos for young professionals commuting into Boston. “Bradford is a neighborhood located between three main highways,” says Matthew E. Juros, a Registered Architect at Fishbrook Design Studio and On the Greater Haverhill Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. “And on a rail line. Boston commuters can hop on and get into Boston.” Housing prices also goes down as you move outside the Boston area, adds Juros. Across the Merrimack, downtown Haverhill brings the community together with activities like the River Ruckus music festival or the opening of a new restaurant. “Haverhill and Bradford, it’s an old traditional New England mill town that has lost its industrial business,” says Juros. “But that middle American world still survives and defines the place.”

While flooding can be an issue, the Merrimack River is closely monitored by the US Army Corps of Engineers, and there is a 16-foot-high flood wall surrounding downtown. “We suffered a terrible flood in the early 20th century,” says Juros. “There are now flood control measures put in place by the Army Corps of Engineers, so it’s really well protected.”

Shopping and dining in downtown Haverhill

“There’s a thriving restaurant and bar scene downtown,” says Juros. Bar and comfort food is served at The Peddler’s Daughter Irish Restaurant & Pub, where framed photos adorn the brick walls and patches from government organizations hang above the bar, giving the place an eclectic home-style feel. Described as a colorful towney bar by Juros, The Tap Brewing Company has classic American pub fare and beers on tap. For something more upscale, BOSA Coastal Italian sits atop a high rise overlooking the river, serving Italian seafood dishes. In Central Plaza, off Main Street, there’s a Market Basket for groceries. Closer to home, Steampunk Station is a café decorated like an antique shop and offers breakfast and lunch.
