East Parish
Exploring the acres of green space around Winnekenni Castle
One of East Parish’s popular features is an interconnected series of parks, ponds and forests that surround Winnekenni Castle. This 700-acre area was originally owned by doctor, chemist, author and editor Dr. James R. Nichols, who built Winnekenni Castle in the 1870s. There are trails for horseback riding and hiking, as well as tennis courts. Ben Delaware, the Recreation Director for the city of Haverhill, says that the city also offers several wilderness classes in Winnekenni Park. A wilderness survival expert from nearby Groton comes to teach children how to build shelters and track animals. In addition, the local cycle store, Riverside Cycle, organizes bike races in the park, and high school cross country teams hold their meets along the trails as well, Delaware says. A public launch on Lake Pentucket provides opportunities for kayaking, canoeing and electric-motor boating. In the summer, children can take fishing clinics at Plug Pond. Members of Renaissance Golf Club can enjoy the private, 18-hole course, which was designed by Brian Silva.Colonial-inspired architecture in East Parish
Some of the homes in East Parish date back to the late 1800s, while others were built after the turn of the 21st century. Colonial-style features, such as decorative shutters and pitched roofs, are a common element in both old and new houses. Lots in the community are usually spacious — some properties even span multiple acres. Single-family pricing usually ranges between $400,000 and $800,000, but there are a few custom-built residences beside the Renaissance Golf Club that sell for upwards of $1 million. There is also a small development of townhouses close to Interstate 495. These three- and four-bedroom units are valued between $500,000 and $550,000.Access to I-495 allows for travel into Boston and New Hampshire
