Highlands
Suburban Neighborhood in Haverhill, Massachusetts
Essex County 01830
From 1700s homes to newer multifamily builds
Highlands has perhaps Haverhill’s most architecturally diverse collection of residences. A few date back as far as the 1700s, and some were built in recent years. Second Empire, Queen Anne, Dutch Colonial, Federal and American Foursquare designs line the neighborhood’s oak-shaded sidewalks. “You have a lot of massive, beautiful Victorian homes built in the 1800s and 1900s, which are usually well-maintained by their owners,” says Realtor Chris Blauvelt of William Raveis Real Estate. Some single-family homes have sold between $550,000 and $900,000 in recent years. “You have more multifamilies than single families in that part of Haverhill,” Blauvelt says. There are condos in converted Victorian-era homes and a few in post-2000 complexes. Units may sell from $200,000 to $400,000, while entire multifamily buildings tend to list from $750,000 to $1.1 million. The neighborhood has an overall CAP Index crime score of 7 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4. This is due, in part, to higher-than-average scores for violent crimes."You almost forget you're in Haverhill"
Gale Park occupies a triangular, nearly 1-acre block in the neighborhood’s northern tip. It houses the only public fountain in Haverhill, as well as shaded benches overlooking the park’s statues. Lake Saltonstall, or as locals refer to it, Plug Pond, is the community’s largest recreation area. This park’s public beach offers swimming access, and wooded trails surround the lake, connecting hikers to the 700-acre Winnekenni Park Conservation Area. The conservation area is a popular place for mountain biking, boating and taking pictures by the historic Winnekenni Castle. “You almost forget you’re in Haverhill when you’re there,” says RE/MAX Bentley’s Realtor and Essex County expert Joe Luciano. The Haverhill Public Library is just south along Main Street, and it has a full calendar of events, including teen arts and crafts, children's story times and family movie nights.Haverhill High readies students for biomedicine and other careers
Children in Highlands are zoned for the Haverhill Public Schools district, which receives a C-plus Niche rating. Golden Hill Elementary earns a C-plus rating and Dr. Paul Nettle Middle gets a C. Both schools are less than 1 mile east of most Highlands homes. Haverhill High School receives a B-minus, and it offers career pathways to students interested in biomedicine, information technology and other trades.River Ruckus and other city events
Many of Haverhill’s events take place in Riverfront Park, which rests at the edge of the Merrimack River, about 1 mile southeast of Highlands. There is a fireworks show to celebrate the Fourth of July, and before Christmas, there is a holiday stroll where residents sing carols through downtown. In September, there is a day-long music festival called River Ruckus. It kicks off with a car show, and after the sun sets, people gather to watch fireworks over the river.Close to the Haverhill train station
Highlands is less than 1 mile from downtown Haverhill, which has a train station with both Amtrak and Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority commuter rail service. It’s the starting point of the MBTA’s Haverhill Line, and trains usually make their way into Boston in just over an hour. Residents who prefer to drive can take Main Street to connect with Interstate 495. It’s around a 35-mile trip to downtown Boston or to the Boston Logan International Airport. Portsmouth, New Hampshire, is also about 30 miles northeast, with more employment opportunities and the Portsmouth International Airport. Residents can find emergency medical care at the Holy Family Hospital, a little over 2 miles away.Long-standing Mediterranean Pizza & Subs
Sidewalks lead to a few nearby businesses. Mediterranean Pizza & Subs Restaurant has called Highlands home since 1969, serving Italian and Greek staples in a laid-back environment. There’s a CVS along Main Street, and a Market Basket supermarket just south of the neighborhood. Some of downtown Haverhill’s most popular restaurants —including A-1 Deli, a downhome American-style café — are within blocks. Many Haverhill residents do the bulk of their shopping 3 miles north, in New Hampshire, where there are big-box stores and tax-free shopping.
