In the 1830s, Downtown Haverhill found its footing as a shoe-manufacturing community along the Merrimack River. It is now an evolving downtown, combining the city’s history with new construction and new life. Older brick condos and apartments located above local restaurants and newly constructed buildings line the neighborhood's main roads. The new buildings are an effort to attract homebuyers to the area with its access to parks and transportation options. “The city is putting a lot of effort into making downtown more of a destination area,” says Kevin Vitali, an associate broker with Real Broker MA who has been serving the Haverhill area for over 24 years. “They are building a bunch of new buildings to capitalize the access to commuter rails and restaurants.”

Dining options along Restaurant Row
Dining options are abundant in the Downtown Haverhill area, with over 25 non-chain establishments within a short distance of one another, a section Vitali says is sometimes referred to as “restaurant row.” BOSA Coastal Italian is one of the newer spots downtown; it's a high-end restaurant with patio views of the Merrimack River. Hidden Pig is another spot just a short walk away with a large assortment of burgers, chicken sandwiches and craft cocktails in a modern industrial setting. Between those two restaurants is Boba Tea and Snow Ice House, which has become popular for a sweet treat or morning pick-me-up to those working downtown. Residents can grocery shop at the Market Basket right next to Main Street or head to the Haverhill Farmers Market, which has been a staple in the area every Saturday from June to October since 1978.

Major roads and train stations close to downtown
Main Street and Merrimack Street are the main crossroads for the downtown area, connecting residents to dining and shopping and providing access to Interstate 495, which is 2 miles away. For public transportation, residents are within a couple of blocks of the Haverhill train station for Amtrak and the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority commuter rail. From here, residents can travel 40 miles north to Dover or 40 miles south to Boston. The city also has the Merrimack Valley Regional Transit Authority bus line with multiple stops throughout downtown. The Merrimack Valley Hospital is 2 miles away from the core of downtown, and Boston Logan International Airport is 38 miles to the south.

River Ruckus and art walks
Haverhill is home to several annual events, with one of the largest and most well-known being River Ruckus, which typically takes place in late September. During the event, the main roads are closed to make room for stages, vendors, food trucks with live music, a car show and a fireworks display over the Merrimack River. The downtown area also has an art walk every third Saturday of the month, where businesses open up and allow local artists to show off their work. “The city is working to turn downtown into a big art area. I’ve participated in it before, and it’s a really nice time to stroll around,” Vitali says.

History and exercise in and around Haverhill
G.A.R. Park, also known as “Grand Army Park,” is the only green space in Downtown Haverhill which has a playset. There is also a Korean War Memorial connected by a series of paved paths just a short walk from most residences. Two miles to the east is Riverside Park, a much larger space with nine baseball diamonds and a dog park with views of the Merrimack River. Less than 2 miles to the north is one of Haverhill’s more notable parks, Winnekenni Park. The park is home to the Winnekenni Castle, which was constructed as a summer house in 1875. Vitali says the cobblestone castle is now an event space with over 6 miles of trails, forest and lakeside scenery, as well as tennis courts and a playground.

Older multi-unit homes and brick condos
Housing options in Downtown Haverhill include historic brick condos and multi-unit homes on the outskirts of the neighborhood, with residences often constructed in the late 1800s and early 1900s. There is some newer construction from the late 2010s. These multi-unit homes and townhouses often take inspiration from New Englanders and triple-decker designs with wood and vinyl siding. Condo prices range from $200,000 to $350,000, and multi-unit home prices fall between $350,000 and $500,000. “Haverhill is one of the most affordable neighborhoods in Essex County,” Vitali says. The community has a CAP Index Score of 8 out of 10, which is much higher than the national average of 4 out of 10.

Education paths at Haverhill High School
Students can start their education at Golden Hill Elementary School, which receives a C-plus rating on Niche. From there, they can move on to Nettle Middle School, which scores a C, before finishing up at the B-minus-rated Haverhill High School. The high school offers several routes for students, including Marine Corps Junior ROTC courses, career technical education courses and early college courses.
