History celebrated at a waterfront festival
Mount Washington, a neighborhood in Haverhill 50 minutes from Boston, has a past with a lot of “sole.” Once a top United States shoe producer, the area's industrial buildings have since been converted into lofts. Mount Washington’s streets are in a planned grid pattern, lined with thin sidewalks, tall homes, and flourishing greenery. The mighty Merrimack, the river that runs along Mount Washington’s southern edge, is a place for recreation and the location of Haverhill’s annual waterfront festival. The waterfront festival pays homage to the area’s past reliance on hydropower. Haverhill builds community is through the Make it Haverhill event hosted once a month by the Haverhill Public Library, where librarians “bring resources, help people with library cards and give away Children’s books,” says Amanda Levy, a reference librarian at the Haverhill Public Library.
Condos and colonials
Homes in the area are in the colonial and Cape Cod styles. Most multifamily homes are converted into condos and go for $300,000 to $600,000. Many larger, refurbished homes are sold for $500,000 to $1 million to landlords hoping to rent out the four- to 10-bedroom homes.
