Riverside
Suburban Neighborhood in Haverhill, Massachusetts
Essex County 01830

From contemporary condos to classic Foursquares
Riverside homes sit along sometimes gridded, sometimes winding streets generally lacking sidewalks. They were mainly built during the 1900s, though some have stood since the early 1800s. Single-family properties feature American Foursquare, ranch-style, bi-level, split-level and New Traditional designs. A three-bedroom Foursquare around 1,100 square feet that needs updates might cost in the high $300,000s. Pricier detached homes — like a four-bedroom New Traditional nearing 3,000 square feet — could reach the mid-$700,000s. Contemporary condos in the neighborhood start at around $215,000 and can hit the high $400,000s for riverside properties. Townhouses are also available from the $200,000s to the $500,000s.Fifty acres of sports facilities and more
“Riverside Park is probably one of Haverhill’s biggest parks, with open space and a trail along the river,” Luciano says. This 50-acre green space is a hotspot for local athletes, with basketball and tennis courts and nearly a dozen baseball and softball diamonds. Haverhill High School plays home football, soccer, field hockey, lacrosse and baseball games at the park’s Trinity Stadium. The stadium opened in 2016 and has hosted the likes of Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth. Riverside Park visitors can also take their four-legged companions to the fenced dog park. About ½ mile down the river, Marianna’s Marina offers docking for hundreds of boats and other maritime services. Local anglers can launch their vessels from the marina for a day of bass fishing. Riverside is also adjacent to Renaissance Golf Club, a members-only escape with tennis courts, an outdoor pool, a fitness center and 18 holes of golf. Two public schools down the road
Two public schools operate in Riverside’s western section, welcoming the neighborhood’s youngest students. Golden Hill Elementary accommodates kindergarten through fourth grade and has a C-plus from Niche. Immediately south, Dr. Paul Nettle Middle School serves grades five through eight and has a C. Haverhill High, rated a B-minus, enrolls nearly 2,000 teens annually. Students can participate in learning academies focused on career skills, STEM and other areas.Down the road from the commuter train
Holy Family Hospital — Haverhill operates at the neighborhood’s heart, offering a quick trip for those needing medical attention. Groveland Street carries drivers east across the river into Groveland or west toward downtown Haverhill. Merrimack Valley Transit services a few bus stops along this central thoroughfare. Boston commuters can reach the city in about 70 minutes via the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority train from Haverhill Station.Mexican eats with locally sourced ingredients
The centrally located Azul Mexican Restaurant is perhaps the neighborhood’s best-known independent restaurant. Its Mexican menu incorporates New England-sourced ingredients and includes the popular chicken- and steak-stuffed “Burrito Loco.” A few blocks west on Groveland Street, Roasted Coffee Bar offers a wide selection of pick-me-up beverages flavored with homemade syrups. Customers can enjoy their handcrafted drinks over breakfast sandwiches and pastries. Market Basket operates a supermarket in the neighborhood, sharing a shopping center with a hardware store, Dunkin’ and other businesses.
