Where Haverhill spreads out

On the Massachusetts-New Hampshire state line, Upper Main Street is a Haverhill neighborhood with suburban comfort. “The thing with Haverhill is you have dense urban areas and then places that are super rural,” says Realtor with Keller Williams and Haverhill local Vivien Marcus. “You can get houses with large pieces of property.” Away from the town center, this is where Haverhill starts to spread out. As the name suggests, Upper Main Street consists of some of Main Street, a commercial thoroughfare, and the residential roads branching off it. Plus, the neighborhood has easy access to major roadways and scenic outdoor spaces.

Variety of housing options and a suburban feel

Upper Main Street’s single-family homes sit on large, landscaped lots. Residential roads are wide and walkable, and the neighborhood has a classic suburban feel. There’s a variety of home styles, from Colonial Revivals and Dutch Colonials to Arts and Crafts and ranch-style homes. Single-family properties typically run between $340,000 and $655,000, depending on the size, age and condition. There are also condos in the area, in communities like Northside Condominiums and the Village at Brickett Hill. These units can cost $215,000 to $325,000, while nearby townhouses run in the $440,000 to $525,000 range. “There are low property taxes in this town,” Marcus says. “It makes housing very affordable for a lot of people that get priced out of other towns.”

Nearby outdoor escapes and recreation

John’s Woods at Tattersall Farm is just west. Once a working dairy farm, the park now has well-maintained trails weaving through forests, fields and wetlands. This is a popular spot for hiking and bird-watching. It’s next to the 57-acre Crystal Shores Conservation Area, a protected area with trails through the woods and by Crystal Lake. The lake is a primary water supply source for Haverhill, so swimming and boating are not allowed; however, fishing from the shore is permitted with a license. Golfers tee off at the adjacent Crystal Lake Golf Club, an 18-hole public course. The Clement Farm Disc Golf Course is also in the neighborhood.
