Neighborhood in Haverhill, Massachusetts

Variety of housing options and a suburban feel
Upper Main Street’s single-family homes sit on large, landscaped lots. Residential roads are wide and walkable, and the neighborhood has a classic suburban feel. There’s a variety of home styles, from Colonial Revivals and Dutch Colonials to Arts and Crafts and ranch-style homes. Single-family properties typically run between $340,000 and $655,000, depending on the size, age and condition. There are also condos in the area, in communities like Northside Condominiums and the Village at Brickett Hill. These units can cost $215,000 to $325,000, while nearby townhouses run in the $440,000 to $525,000 range. “There are low property taxes in this town,” Marcus says. “It makes housing very affordable for a lot of people that get priced out of other towns.”Nearby outdoor escapes and recreation
John’s Woods at Tattersall Farm is just west. Once a working dairy farm, the park now has well-maintained trails weaving through forests, fields and wetlands. This is a popular spot for hiking and bird-watching. It’s next to the 57-acre Crystal Shores Conservation Area, a protected area with trails through the woods and by Crystal Lake. The lake is a primary water supply source for Haverhill, so swimming and boating are not allowed; however, fishing from the shore is permitted with a license. Golfers tee off at the adjacent Crystal Lake Golf Club, an 18-hole public course. The Clement Farm Disc Golf Course is also in the neighborhood.Shopping and dining on Main Street and nearby Stateline Plaza
Main Street, lined with businesses and restaurants, cuts through the center of the neighborhood. Locals can dine at 110 Grill, a casual restaurant serving pub grub and fun cocktails. Nearby, Mr. Mike’s Restaurant & Lounge serves hearty portions of American fare, while Lucky Corner is a go-to for Chinese takeout. There are also many chains along Main. The Stateline Plaza is just north in New Hampshire and has a Shaw’s grocery store, T.J. Maxx, Petco and more.Traveling through the Merrimack Valley
“Geographically, we’re in a great location to get around the Merrimack Valley,” Marcus says. “We have very easy access to the major highways in the area.” Interstate 495, which connects to interstates 95 and 93, borders the community to the south. The neighborhood also has easy access to Route 125. Merrimack Valley Regional Transit Authority bus routes run along North Avenue and connect to nearby communities like Larence and Newbury Port. Downtown Haverhill is about 3 miles south. Here, residents will find an MBTA train station, with the Haverhill Line providing direct access to Boston’s North Station, about 35 miles south. While there isn’t an airport in the area, the Boston Logan International Airport is about 40 miles south.Students attend Haverhill Public Schools
Haverhill Public Schools serve Upper Main Street. Students can attend Pentucket Lake Elementary and John G. Whittier Middle School, which both get C-plus scores from Niche. They can finish their public education at Haverhill High School, earning a B-minus and offering the Classical Academy, a challenging program emphasizing the arts and sciences through advanced coursework and specialized classes.
