Quiet New England living near the Merrimack River
The Massachusetts neighborhood of West Parish sits sandwiched between the New Hampshire state line and the twisting banks of the Merrimack River. A rural, residential landscape that mostly branches off the intersections of Broadway and Lake Street, West Parish is bounded to the east by Interstate 495 and offers a balance between quiet New England living and proximity to both Haverhill and Boston. “It’s a little bit more densely residential,” says Vivien Marcus, a Realtor and broker associate with Keller Williams Realty. “It goes to the point of being completely rural, but there is easy access to the highway and Salem neighborhoods in New Hampshire for tax-free shopping. The draw is mostly the location and ease of getting into the neighborhood.”
The Merrimack River, located just south of West Parish, is a key part of community.
Locals of West Parish frequently visit the Downtown Haverhill area, with very pedestrian friendly streets filled shops and restaurants.

Single-family homes with spacious lots in West Parish
Homes in West Parish tend to be located on Broadway or Lake Street, or on the streets radiating off the two main thoroughfares, and often have some breathing room thanks to spacious lawns. “It’s a little more rural, with larger houses on larger lots,” Marcus says. “There are many colonial-style and Cape Cods, kind of like most of New England, with center-hall entrances.” In addition to single-family residences, townhouses and condos are also folded into the West Parish landscape.
Most single-family homes in West Parish cost between $600,000 and $800,000, though some can be priced up to around $1 million. Townhouses often sell for $400,000 to $500,000, while condos typically fall between $200,000 and $400,000. “There are a lot of condo communities in the area,” Marcus says. “Haverhill is always a good bang for the buck because the property taxes are among the lowest in the entire state.” In addition to the lower tax rates, the area is also sought after for its pastoral landscapes. “It attracts people looking for space and quiet,” Liriano says. “When you cross through there, it’s just hills and hills of grass. There are a few small developments, some cul-de-sacs, but mostly single-family homes and a lot of new construction in that area.” West Parish has yet to receive a CAP Index Crime Score.

Though boating and swimming in the reservoir are prohibited, locals can fish from the banks or hike along several trails and areas nearby, including the Crystal Gorge, Rurak Point and Creek Brook Conservation Areas. “There is a lot of recreation out there,” Marcus says. “There is abundant wildlife, lots of woods and it’s a nice, quiet neighborhood.” Creek Brook itself flows into and out of the reservoir, winding its way through portions of the neighborhood, and is also popular for fishing. Crystal Lake Golf Club is open to the public and features 18 holes adjacent to West Parish. Those seeking more on-the-water recreation can head to the Merrimack River to fish, swim and boat. Less than 3 miles east, Swasey Field Park has sports facilities, a splash pad and a playground.

We don’t have a lot of chain restaurants in the area and have a lot of smaller, family-owned restaurants. It’s fun to live in an area where there are all kinds of dining experiences.” Just south, the Phoenician Restaurant on Alpha Street serves up Mediterranean dishes. Downtown Haverhill is around 3 miles from central West Parish. Shoppers often visit a Target on the east side of West Parish or a Market Basket less than 2 miles from the center of the neighborhood.
