Lakeside charm, golf courses and a major highway surround Avondale

Avondale sits between a commercial stretch of United States Route 95, to the west, and golf courses that line the banks of Hayden and Avondale lakes, to the east. “It’s an older, established neighborhood. It has proximity to the golf course and the lake, so there’s lots to do,” says Elsa Owsley, a Realtor with Silvercreek Realty Group, who has over 23 years of experience. Less than 10 miles from the heart of Coeur d’Alene, Avondale has a distinct lakeside feel. “For the most part, it’s keeping the charm of the community. It’s not a cookie-cutter neighborhood,” she says. “It has the North Idaho Craftsman look.”

Avondale has a broad range of housing prices and homes on large lots

The Avondale housing market encompasses a wide range of price points, from $370,000 to $1.2 million. Older properties in the area include Minimal Traditional, split-level and ranch-style homes built between the 1970s and the 1990s. These properties range up to an acre and a half, with room for patios, storage sheds and workshops. Recent constructions also make up a significant portion of the housing stock, including contemporary Craftsman homes and modern, asymmetrical builds that were added starting in the 2000s. More recent constructions sit behind wide driveways that can accommodate boats or recreational vehicles, and many come with monthly homeowners association fees that range from $5 to $50.

A few townhouse complexes have three-bedroom units between $330,000 and $400,000.

A country club, a golf course and Honeysuckle Beach are nearby

Honeysuckle Beach is on the southwestern edge of Lake Hayden, where placid water is backdropped by pine-covered hills. A wooden dock forms a U shape and encloses part of the water at the beach, while paddleboards and kayaks make their way around the structure. “It’s quieter and more private,” Owsley says. “Coeur d’Alene [Lake] is so much busier.” Recreation in Avondale is seemingly centered around social clubs and golf courses. The members-owned Avondale Golf Club is open to the public; golfers can join a variety of clubs and leagues, or refine their technique one-on-one with the club’s PGA instructors. Membership to the nearby Hayden Lake Country Club includes access to its 18-hole course — the first in Idaho — a three-hole practice course and a driving range. Other amenities include pickleball, tennis and bocce courts, a private swimming dock, a marina, a clubhouse and various lounges and bars. “There’s an especially long waiting list for the Hayden golf course,” Owsley says.

$50-million supplemental levy for Coeur d'Alene Public Schools

Children in Avondale may begin their education at Hayden Meadows Elementary School and Canfield Middle School, both of which earn A-minus grades from Niche. They may then enroll at Coeur d’Alene High School, which scores a B grade. All three schools belong to the Coeur d'Alene Public Schools system, which is the recipient of a $50-million supplemental levy, passed at the end of 2024. The funding will go towards teacher salaries, extracurricular programs and support services over the course of two academic years. Extracurricular activities and clubs at Coeur d’Alene High include Ski and Snowboard Club, German Club and a variety of performing arts ensembles.

Restaurants and shopping between U.S. Route 95 and Government Way

The area’s restaurants and businesses are mostly located between U.S. Route 95 and nearby Government Way. Capone’s Pub & Grill, a Coeur d’Alene chain that made an appearance on Guy Fieri’s “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” in 2018, has a location on Government Way. It promises more beers on tap than tables, and it makes pizza, grinders and burgers from scratch. Across the highway, Rustler’s Roost is known for its breakfast and its Western theme, complete with rusty, Homestead-era tools, saddles and cowboy hats mounted on wood-paneled walls. Super 1 Foods and Walmart Supercenter — both along U.S. Route 95 — provide groceries.

U.S. Route 95 leads to Coeur d’Alene, and I-90 goes to Spokane

U.S. Route 95 is one of the community’s main thoroughfares. It connects Avondale to downtown Coeur d’Alene, about 8 miles south, and traverses Interstate 90. The interstate heads west to Spokane, roughly 40 miles away, and nearby Spokane International Airport offers more than 20 direct connections to cities across the United States. While the neighborhood is largely car-dependent, CityLink’s C Route bus stops along Honeysuckle Avenue, southwest of Avondale, before it continues to downtown Coeur d’Alene.
