Rural-living along Mobjack Bay
Achilles is the southernmost peninsula in Gloucester County, stretching out into Mobjack Bay like the heel of a foot. This is a rural community, but it’s almost completely carved by coastline, save for the small sliver of land leading to Gloucester Point. As a result, the country lifestyle mixes with scenic views, producing an interesting array of living situations – including multi-million-dollar estates. “There are definitely some huge homes out this way,” says David Tortolini, a Realtor with eXp Realty. “It’s true this area caters to those who might have some kind of celebrity status, but really it’s a combination of people who want to get away from it all and those who have a history of living on the land, like oyster farmers.”
Brick bungalows and modern-traditional home styles
At the entry point of the market, homebuyers can go two routes: they can purchase a wooded lot or a modest home. For example, an acre lot on the Severn River can go for $220,000. But a four-bedroom midcentury brick ranch fixer upper can sell for $150,000. Venturing into the $400,000 range, contemporary homes from the 2020s appear. These will often feature a mash-up of influences, like Craftsman, farmhouse and bungalow. What sets them apart from their vintage peers is usually a bold color palette, like navy blue siding or a kitchen featuring copper and black tones. Above that, homebuyers might encounter a $600,000 Modern Traditional home from the 2000s, for when more space is desired – five bedrooms, to be exact. Those multi-million-dollar options tend to be Modern Traditional homes as well, this time from the 2010s and reaching beyond 5,000 square feet.
Brick bungalows are seen in Achilles/Browns Bay on mid-sized lots of land.
Larger Modern-Traditional home styles are found on larger lots within Achilles/Browns Bay.

Local greenery and boating on Mobjack Bay
Woodville Park is a popular place to go, and not just because it has a modern playground shaped like a red barn and grain silo. A community garden, soccer fields and walking trails are other amenities. At Machicomoco State Park, miles of paved trails welcome bikers as well as hikers. People also go there to camp, whether that’s in a cabin or a yurt. Paddleboarders are seen on the water, and many visitors choose to follow the interpretive signage elaborating on Native American history. The Timberneck House, built in 1793, is preserved on the grounds.
Many Achilles/Browns Bay residents own boats and regularly fish on the Mobjack Bay.
The local Marina offers boating storage and a clean send-off into the Bay.

Shopping at The Point Shoppes
Shopping and dining are done in Gloucester Point, roughly 3 miles from the west end of Achilles. Kroger is the community’s large grocery store. The restaurant scene tends to focus on comfort food, with multiple diners and pizzerias. Scoot’s BBQ isn’t just about brisket: customers go there just as much for the fried chicken, crab cakes and pulled pork sandwiches. With its black and white checkerboard aesthetic, Slammin’ Sammy’s Diner feels like a slice of old school Americana, even though it opened in 2022. Combination platters are named after hot rods, and breakfast is served throughout the day.

Transportation around Achilles/Browns Bay
There aren’t any central thoroughfares in Achilles, but Guinea Road, also known as Route 216, feeds into a network of roads that extends across the peninsula. Residents also take Guinea Road west into Gloucester Point, where they meet the commercial corridor of Route 17. It’s a 10-mile drive north to downtown Gloucester, where other amenities are located, like the Gloucester Brewing Company.
