Southgate’s streets are wide, with well-paved sidewalks guiding through the subdivisions, creating a safe path for families to walk around the neighborhood and to nearby schools. Residents enjoy an active community in Southgate. “Around the holidays, you’ll see neighbors partake in neighborhood Christmas and Halloween events, and people get together at the community pool,” says Bales. Outside of the neighborhood, locals can take part in numerous annual events in downtown Hayward. The Third Thursday Summer Street Party brings in the crowds for local food, live music, a beer and wine garden, plus a hot rod and classic cars show. Hayward’s Latin Jazz Festival has become a community favorite, with live jazz performances taking place on multiple stages along the downtown streets.
