New Sharon has contemporary homes surrounded by farmland
Residents don't have to give up contemporary amenities for country living in New Sharon. Realtor Terri Cote with Keller Williams says the community is "taking cotton and cow fields and turning them into subdivisions"—and that's the draw. The area is booming with new construction, but it's still classic Madison County, with hundreds of acres of farmland lush with soybean and pine wood hollows surrounded by rivers, creeks and swimming holes. "It's pretty much for people who want to get out of the city and have that country feel," Cote says. "But it's still convenient for commuters going into Huntsville." Nearby, Hazel Green offers amenities, so residents who don't want to go into the city won't need to.
Modern homes and custom builds with large acreages
New Sharon differs from some of its neighbors because it has more residential subdivisions, including some with contemporary new builds. New traditional and ranch-style homes in these subdivisions typically feature half-acre to four-acre lots and are priced between $200,000 and $475,000. Newer and larger modern farmhouse-style homes list anywhere from $700,000 to $1 million. Barndominium-style manufactured homes round out New Sharon's housing options and list from $115,000 to $300,000. However, if buyers don't want to live in a subdivision, "You can still buy a few acres and put a house on it," Cote says. Land often lists between $150,000 for three acres and $350,000 for 20 acres.
Madison County School System offers technical academies for high schoolers
New Sharon students may attend the Madison County School System. Students may start at Hazel Green Elementary, which earns an overall A-minus rating from Niche. Meridianville Middle earns an A-minus, and Hazel Green High earns a B-plus. The high school offers students several career and technical education academies, including marketing, STEM and health science pathways options.
Parks and preserves surround New Sharon
Blue Water Springs Park is one of the community's closest places for outdoor recreation. In addition to its playground, the park has athletic fields with a concession stand for Little League games. New Sharon is about 35 to 40 miles from the Tennessee River, a go-to spot for fishing, boating, kayaking and other water sports. There are also swimming holes, fishing creeks and walking trails, such as the Trojan Trail Greenway in the neighboring community of Hazel Green. State parks and green spaces, including Wade Mountain Nature Preserve, are less than 30 miles away in the Appalachian Mountains. There are miles of trails winding through hills and valleys here, and the preserve is rich with wildlife and popular with birdwatchers. Monte Sano State Park is another popular option, featuring mountain biking trails, a playground and a campground.
Residents head south for dining and retail
Because New Sharon is very rural, residents go south for amenities. "You have to leave the area to do everything, but there's a Walmart and some restaurants and medical offices in downtown Hazel Green," Cote says. Big Stacks Pit Shop is a favorite for Alabama-style barbecue platters, while Las Trojas Cantina provides classic taco platters and margaritas. Huntsville is the closest option for big box stores like Target and Sam's Club. There are also shopping malls, like Bridge Street Town Center, which offers eateries, a movie theater, retail chains and department stores. Huntsville is also a go-to for entertainment, with venues like the Von Braun Center hosting hockey and basketball games, monster truck rallies and concerts.
Highway 431 brings residents to Huntsville
Highway 431 is the area's most prominent thoroughfare, connecting residents to larger communities south, like Hazel Green and Huntsville. Highway 72 connects west to Interstate 65. Public transportation is not available to New Sharon residents. Huntsville Hospital is 20 miles from the community, but the Huntsville Urgent Care in Hazel Green provides a more immediate option. Huntsville International Airport is the closest to New Sharon, 33 miles away. New Sharon's CAP Index Crime Score is 2 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.
