Arrowheads and flints in Heath
The city of Heath is only 50 years old, but its first inhabitants still linger in the form of arrowheads and earthworks. “We’re known for our flints,” says Caitlin Bowman, a local Realtor and nearby schoolteacher. “Every now and then when people walk near the original trading post, they find an arrowhead. The local tradition is to hide one when you find it so someone else can too.” Heath is an otherwise quiet suburb with a humble community, just east of Columbus and close to the Scioto River Valley.
Crabapples and sugar maples in the front yard
Heath’s ranch-style homes and split levels commonly offer spacious front yards with plenty of room for gardening. Interspersed with towering evergreens, residents can grow crabapples and sugar maple trees, decorative shrubs or even the occasional weeping willow. Closer to Newark, newer builds like Craftsman and colonial revivals are located off Willow Ridge Drive. Most homes are priced between $200,000 and $400,000, though vacant lots can range from less than $100,000 to nearly $1 million. Many homes feature stone or wood exteriors with small porches or patios. And though sidewalks are few and far between, most residential subdivisions are bike-friendly.

30 miles from Downtown Columbus
With proximity to both Route 16 and I-70, Heath is just 30 miles from Downtown Columbus. “It takes about 35 minutes to get downtown,” Bowman says, herself a commuter. “Super easy, rarely any traffic backup unless it’s rush hour.” While public transportation is not offered in Heath aside from Licking County Transit, the city remains just 5 miles from Newark and Hebron via Route 79, Hebron Road or Route 13, Jacksontown Road. And though John Glenn Columbus International Airport is 36 miles away, Newark-Heath Airport is within city limits via Irving Wick Drive.
Hebron Road’s year-round recreation
Hoback Park is home to the Heath Riverfront Walkway, traversing the South Fork of the Licking River. The park’s 20 acres include ball fields and a basketball court. On the other side of Hebron Road, Geller Park has a 2-mile walking trail and sand volleyball courts. In the winter, Geller’s snowy hills make for great sledding. Meanwhile, Heath Water Park is an oasis for kids in the summer. The shallow pool holds a playground with water features including a dumping bucket and slides. Lap and kiddie pools are also provided for locals of all ages. As for hidden gems, “I love going to the Dawes Arboretum,” Bowman says. “They have food truck events and 5Ks. It’s a beautiful place that’s been taken care of over the years.”
There is plenty to do outdoors at Geller Park in Heath.

Earthworks & Events
Newark Earthworks is a prehistoric Native American earthen enclosure located within Heath’s city limits. Recognized as an official prehistoric monument of the State of Ohio, the landmark has become somewhat of a tourist attraction for those looking to view the earthworks and Great Circle Museum. Heath also has an annual Oktoberfest, which is hosted by the Davis Shai House, an 1861 gothic revival home managed by the community arts council. Just 5 miles west, Infirmary Mound Park hosts a summer concert series, yoga in the park and painting classes.
The first indoor shopping mall in Licking County
The Indian Mound Mall was a hit in the 80s. Today, its renovated movie theater has single-handedly maintained the mall’s foot traffic. Alongside commercial shops are a trampoline park and even a performing arts theater. As the first and only indoor shopping mall in Licking County, residents are waiting to see how it develops. Standard retail can be found in shopping centers like Cross Creek, the Southgate Plaza and Southgate Center. A Walmart Supercenter and Kroger serve the greater Heath region. The Coffee Shack Coffee Roasters & Café opened in 2013, relying on fair trade beans for its locally roasted coffee. And Pappy’s Grill on 79 is a Florida Keys-themed restaurant with seafood and classic American cuisine.
