Heidelberg
Farmhouses and cottages with rare new construction homes
Homes are scattered across Heidelberg’s countryside. Some sit along historic small-town streets, while others are tucked away on winding backroads. Lot sizes in this area tend to be large, ranging from half an acre to upwards of 20 acres, bordered by sweeping fields separated by rows of trees. Detached outbuildings such as barns, garages and workshops are common around here. Most homes are ranch-style and split-levels from the 1970s and ‘80s, with a few older cottages or farmhouses and even the occasional new construction. “The homes I sold out there were new because they’d just discovered some land that wasn’t being used,” says Tammy Sites, another Lebanon area resident and Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Homesale Realty. “Sometimes new developments come up when farms get sold off.” List prices start at roughly $200,000 and can climb to $625,000. Heidelberg currently has a CAP Index crime score of 1 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.Eastern Lebanon County Schools are north of home
Heidelberg is within the Eastern Lebanon County School District. Most schools are to the north in Myerstown and the surrounding Jackson Township. Jackson Elementary serves kindergarten through the second grade and scores a B-minus from Niche. Eastern Lebanon County Intermediate houses grades three through five and earns a C. Eastern Lebanon County Middle receives a C and Eastern Lebanon County High gets a B-minus. Students at the high school participate in the Veterans History Project by interviewing local veterans and documenting their experiences with the Veterans History Project at the Library of Congress. “There’s also a big Mennonite population around the outskirts of Schaefferstown,” says Sites, noting the presence of Mennonite and Christian private schools in the area, including Schaefferstown Mennonite High and Sun Valley Parochial School.Hunting and wildlife watching at Middle Creek
Heidelberg Township Park lies right on the western edge of Schaefferstown and contains the area’s youth baseball and softball facilities. In fall 2023, the park got a facelift in the form of a brand-new playground and new surfaces on its combined pickleball-basketball court. “Middle Creek is farther down that way, outside of Kleinfeltersville,” says Sites, referring to the 6,000-acre Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area. “There’s a ton of trails, and lots of bird watchers go there.” The Visitors Center hosts events such as the Wild Goose Chase 5k Race and a Wildlife Art Show, while also educating parkgoers about how Middle Creek serves as a haven for migratory waterfowl and other wetland species. Hunting and fishing are also popular activities in the park, with campgrounds and scenic overlooks nearby.Summertime thrills at the Clyde Micro Sprint racetrack
The Clyde Martin Memorial Speedway, which calls itself the “biggest little track,” is a 1/8-mile clay racetrack. During its regular season from April to September, the Clyde hosts Saturday night races with five divisions of Micro Sprint racing. After more than 65 seasons, the Speedway continues to draw Heidelberg residents to its bleachers to experience up-close, high-speed thrills. Some spots to shop and dine in Schaefferstown
Heidelberg is largely comprised of farms, barns and agriculture-supporting industries, with only a handful of essential businesses scattered across its small towns. Dutch-Way Farm Market and BB’s Grocery Outlet are the area’s grocery stores, both located in Schaefferstown. While there, residents can dine on Pennsylvania Dutch comfort food at Dutch-Way Family Restaurant or pick up a pizza from Caruso’s of Schaefferstown. In Kleinfeltersville, K-Ville Hotel & Tavern is a longstanding establishment — its building was constructed in the mid-19th century — and is a popular choice for dining on its back deck. Between the churches and grazing fields that dot the one-lane backroads are a handful of produce stands such as Ulrichs Farm Market and the Lebanon Produce Auction, giving residents access to some of the freshest food straight from local Heidelberg farms.Along Pennsylvania highways southeast of Lebanon
Multiple state highways crisscross through Heidelberg, and the township is just north of Interstate 76 or south of U.S. Highway 422. Lebanon is approximately 5 to 10 miles northwest, while state capitol attractions and the closest international airport are roughly 35 to 40 miles west in Harrisburg. To the southeast, Philadelphia is about 75 to 80 miles away.
