Splash and play at parks, observe nature at central Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve
Families with kids head to Wells Park and Pool in the neighborhood for its playground and open fields. Tennis enthusiasts practice their backswing on lighted courts at Wells Park, and a fitness course offers open-air exercise. The splash pad and pool are open seasonally, hosting swim teams and lessons. There's also a popular splash pad at Weston Hills Park on the east side of Pittman. "If you're looking for the summer water scene, though," says Bolton, "you really need to go to Cowabunga Bay Water Park for the wave pool and slides. They also have special adult nights with cool, funky lighting everywhere and music. Or you can take your kids to the Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve over the summer as an educational opportunity." This 140-acre oasis at the Water Reclamation Facility is home to abundant migratory and native birds. "It's also a great first date," adds Bolton, "that's way more interesting than going to a bar. It's so beautiful and refreshing, and with the sounds of all the birds, it's just surreal." Clark County Wetlands Park to the north is patterned with paved and unpaved multiuse trails, perfect for weekend exploration. Golfers take lessons and tee off at the 18-hole Chimera Golf Club, just two miles east of Weston Hills Park, and relax after a round at the bar or restaurant.Mediterranean-style condos, townhouses and single-family homes
Most Pittman-Henderson homes have Spanish or Mediterranean architectural details, including archways, curved tile roofing and earthtone stucco exteriors. Desert-friendly landscaping pops with bursts of greenery and blooms, and some yards feature tall palms. Condos built in the 1980s along Sunset Road, range from $190,000 to $215,000. Existing townhouses and newly constructed attached homes ask between $365,000 and $420,00. Single-family homes range from 1960s stucco ranch styles for $370,000 to brand-new two-story Mediterranean styles at Modena II for $530,000.B-grade public, A-grade charter and private schools
Public schools are within the Clark County School District, which gets a B on Niche. Kids start at Edna Hinman Elementary, given a C, or Josh Stevens Elementary, which gets an A. Middle schoolers go to Brown Academy of International Studies or Lyal Burkholder, both of which earn a B-minus. High schoolers advance to the Basic Academy of International Studies, which gets a Niche C-plus. Charter options include the Pinecrest Academy of Nevada through 11th grade, which earns an A-minus, and the Coral Academy of Science through seventh grade, which gets an A. In 2023, The Coral Academy of Science's First Lego League Team won the first-place Rising All-Star Award at the state tournament. Lake Mead Christian Academy offers a private option that earns an A grade.Stroll, shop and dine at Galleria Mall, Water Street and District at Green Valley Ranch
Just a mile or so west of Boulder Highway, Galleria at Sunset mall is filled with over 100 eateries, specialty retailers and department stores. "They have a really great food court, and they've remodeled within the last decade or so, and it's nice and cool inside," says Bolton. "You'll see a lot of seniors doing laps in the mornings." Two miles southeast of Pittman, the charming Water Street District is a destination for family-owned restaurants and unique boutiques. Enjoy a cold brew and live band on the massive patio at Gold Mine Tavern or Mexican favorites at Juan's Flaming Fajitas. "The perfect date night," adds Bolton, "is walking around the District at Green Valley Ranch. Have dinner at Bella Vita, save room for dessert and walk around the district with an ice cream from Ben and Jerry's." For grocery runs, Albertsons and Smith's supermarkets are a short drive south, and if casino fun is on the table, Jokers Wild is a neighborhood favorite for games and slots.Commute downtown on main corridors
Residents primarily use cars and trucks to get around, though streets are wide enough for cyclists and joggers. Although public transit isn't the main mode here, the Regional Transportation Commission bus stops are available along Sunset Road and Boulder Highway. Major thoroughfares, including Boulder Highway, provide commuters with routes to Downtown Henderson, four miles southeast, and Downtown Las Vegas, 12 miles to the northwest. The Harry Reid International Airport is less than 9 miles west of the southwestern side of Pittman.Dry heat, flash flooding
"We're a dry, desert-hot climate here," says Bolton. "As you get closer to mountains, Lake Las Vegas or Kyle Canyon, it might get a couple degrees cooler, but overall, it's very hot, and our water is very hard, so you'll need a water softener in your home." Southern Nevada is also known to experience flash flooding during heavy summer rainfalls. Homeowners can check with the Clark County Regional Flood Control District for information regarding their property.Celebrate at Water Street Plaza events
The amphitheater at Water Street Plaza hosts some of the area's most anticipated events, from movie and game viewings on the lower plaza's 42-foot-wide digital screen to the annual three-day St. Patrick's Day Festival and Parade on Water Street. This holiday celebration draws more than 50,000 attendees to carnival rides, live music and loads of food, beverages and shopping.
