Herricks, a residential area within Nassau County, is known for its school district and accessibility to shopping, dining and recreation. One reason living in Herricks is so desirable despite its small size is its accessibility to major commuting options. Locals work nearby at Northwell Health and in New York City, 23 miles away by car and under an hour by train. Bus stops bordering the community can reach Queens in 45 minutes on the n22 Jamacia line. “There are a lot of amenities,” says Nina Jean Harris, a Realtor and Diamond award recipient with Signature Premiere Properties, one of the fastest-growing real estate companies in Long Island. “It’s close to the mall, and it’s close to Jones Beach.” The community provides its residents with a community center and a walkable layout. “There’s a lot of unity in Herricks. It’s a very nice community,” says Maryann Milovcic, a licensed real estate agent and four-time Gold Award recipient at Douglas Elliman Real Estate. “There’s a lot of diversity there too. It has nice, working families who just want to have their kids live in a great little [community] and have all the family values. Wide roadways are lined with thin sidewalks next to manicured lawns. Homes are larger, with medium-sized lots separated by manicured hedges and mature trees. Homes are in the split-level, Cape Cod, ranch and new historicism styles. “Home prices depend on size,” says Harris. “It can go all the way up to $1 million.” Larger homes with three to five bedrooms range from $1 million to $1.4 million, while homes with four bedrooms or less range from $700,000 to $1 million. “There’s always new construction popping up,” says Harris. “People are coming in and buying older homes, knocking them down and putting up new construction.”

Spanish immersion and music programs at Herricks High
Flanders is served by the Herricks Union Free School District, which receives an A-plus from Niche and is listed as the 11th best school district in New York. It’s also the first district in the state to have a fully articulated K-12 Spanish language immersion program, aiming to ensure that the community’s children grow up bilingual and ready to engage with and participate in the global community. “Schools are highly rated,” says Harris. “that’s a big reason people move there.” Children attend Denton Avenue School and Herricks Middle School. Students advance to Herricks High School. All three schools receive an A-plus. “Herricks is known for their music,” says Harris. “They play at Carnegie Hall.” The Herricks school district Is nationally recognized for its music education and hosts a summer music program.

Cooling off at Roger Fay Williston Park Pool
Herricks Park features a pond frequented by geese and other waterfowl and is a favorite spot for locals to run, fish or sit on a bench to read a book. Herricks Community Center hosts activities for all ages, from classical ballet to senior bingo. In summer, residents may visit the Roger Fay Williston Park Pool, a public pool with a basketball court and a baseball field. The pool requires a registration fee and proof of address to access. Residents of Herricks may enjoy winter sports year-round at the Iceland Long Island Skating Rink, which offers figure skating lessons and hockey leagues. The Jones Beach State Park is a white-sand beach 20 miles from Herricks. The location hosts concerts and a Fourth of July fireworks display.

Shopping and dining on Hillside Avenue
Hillside Avenue has a variety of food choices, including Sangria 71, an upscale restaurant serving sangria and classic Spanish dishes. Close to the Northern State Parkway is the highly rated 388, an Italian restaurant and lounge. “There’s a lot of good pizza places. Angelo’s is one of my favorites,” says Harris. Angelo’s Pizzeria and Ristorante serves pizza, pasta, and other Italian dishes at Parkway Plaza-Carle Place near Meadowbrook State Parkway. Closer to home, Dominick’s Italian-American Deli is a popular eatery. “Dominick’s Deli is known for their chicken fingers,” says Harris. “People line up for their chicken fingers. They sell a ton of them.” For something sweet, Hildebrandt’s in Williston Park sells homemade ice cream in a diner dating back to 1927. Residents visit Americana Manhasset and Roosevelt Field shopping mall for popular retail locations and chain restaurants. Groceries are available at ShopRite and H Mart.

Commuters use Merillon Avenue and East Williston train station
The community is walkable, with plenty of sidewalks. Commuters may use Merillon Avenue Station and East Williston station on the Long Island Rail Road to reach New York in an hour or less. Nearby are the Northern State Parkway, the Long Island Expressway and New York 25B. “You can commute into the city using Hillside Avenue,” says Milovcic. “The n22 bus takes you to Queens.” The John F. Kennedy International Airport is 15 miles from the area.
The Merillon Avenue Long Island Rail Road Station is located just 1.5 miles south of the Herricks border.

Annual displays at Clark Botanic Gardens
Herricks is a quiet residential area for most of the year, but the community often comes together for celebrations like the yearly four-day Herricks Community Fund Carnival from May 30 to June 2 at the Herricks Community Center. This carnival features rides and fair food. Earnings from the carnival support the Herricks Community Fund, which provides financial support for people in the Herricks community. Founded in 1969, the Clark Botanic Gardens is referred to as a living museum and has annual display gardens containing flora that have been selected due to their superior natural growth in a garden. Residents looking to attend religious services may visit the Church of St. Aidan, Hillside United Methodist and the Shelter Rock Jewish Center.
Herricks Community Center provides recreational and education support to residents of all ages.
