Lakeland Park
There are a few lakefront homes, but most are inland
Lakeland Park’s first houses appeared in the early 1960s, many following ranch-style designs and some taking influence from midcentury modernism. Colonial Revival homes and split-levels also appear on the market. There are no footpaths in the interior of the neighborhood, but one sidewalk follows 12th Street NW and 21st Avenue NW, which hug the edges of Lakeland Park. Detached homes typically go between $250,000 to $450,000. Waterfront homes are in low supply and rarely sell past $800,000. A condominium complex overlooks Lake Hickory from the northeast corner of the neighborhood, offering approximately 100 units in total. Prices range from $125,000 to $225,000, depending on square footage.Schools, colleges and a kick-start at careers
Most residents in Lakeland Park are zoned for Hickory City School District. However, a slither of homes in the northwest are zoned for Burke County School District. Hickory schools that students may attend include Viewmont Elementary and Grandview Middle, which both receive overall B-minus ratings from Niche, and B-rated Hickory High. Hickory High students can take career and technical education courses, such as Automotive Science and Interior Design Fundamentals. Appalachian State University’s new Hickory campus is about 2 miles south of Lakeland Park. Other colleges within Hickory include Lenoir-Rhyne University and Catawba Valley Community College. “There’s a huge amount of community support for the Hickory High and Lenoir-Rhyne football teams,” Herman says. “People who move here can’t believe how many people come to our games. Lenoir-Rhyne is especially good at reaching out and getting the community involved and has a lot of local business sponsors.”Lakeland Park residents prefer driving to get around
US Route 321 is about a mile’s drive away for most residents. The highway travels north through Granite Falls and Lenoir and south toward Charlotte. Hickory Regional Airport, a general aviation and non-commercial airport, is just across 321, far away enough that Lakeland Park residents aren’t bothered by the noise much. Interstate 40, a major east-west highway, is about 4 miles south.Green spaces with fishing, boating and other recreational opportunities
The Lakeland Park neighborhood is sandwiched between two sprawling green spaces: Geitner Park and Glenn C. Hilton Jr. Memorial Park. Geitner Park’s access to Lake Hickory attracts anglers and boaters. Meanwhile, mountain bikers ride the rolling trails, hikers go on leisurely strolls down the newly opened Riverwalk and families come together on the grass or beneath the pavilion for picnics. Glenn C. Hilton Jr. Memorial Park boasts two playgrounds, a disc golf course and a boardwalk that meanders through marshes populated with cranes, frogs and other wildlife. “Lakeland Park has the Blue Dock, a private park with a boat ramp and pier, so even if you’re not lakefront, you have your own lake access,” says Shelly Sebastian, Realtor with Apkee Properties who has been selling homes across North Carolina’s Piedmont region for 16 years.Shopping in Viewmont and at Valley Hills Mall
A Lowes Foods and a Lowe’s Home Improvement are in neighboring Viewmont. There’s also Valley Hills Mall down US Route 70, which offers two stories of department stores such as Dillard’s and Belk, along with jewelers and specialty stores such as Kay and LensCrafters. North Center Street, also known as 2nd Street Northeast closer to Hickory, is lined with restaurant chains and local establishments, including Fourk and Backstreets. “Fourk is a dressier restaurant, while people go to Backstreets to get a good, consistent meal,” Herman says. “And it’s close to the high school, so people will go there before or after football games. But people love to support local businesses in general.”
Baseball, concerts and fireworks at Crawdads Stadium
L.P. Frans Stadium, also known by locals as Crawdads Stadium, is less than a 2-mile drive from most residences. It's the home ballpark of the Hickory Crawdads Single-A Minor League Baseball team. “After they games, they’ll do a fireworks show,” Herman says. “They’ll also do concerts at the stadium sometimes.”
