Ridgeview
Neighborhood in Hickory, North Carolina
Catawba County 28602
Homes on a hill, and at lower-than-average price points
Many lots in Ridgeview sit atop gentle hills, granting some residents views of the distant Blue Ridge Mountains and lending the neighborhood its name. Most parcels span below a quarter of an acre and are well-shaded by mature trees. Sidewalks can usually be found on one side of the road, though residents at times use them for street parking. Mid-century bungalows, ranch-style homes and Minimal Traditional homes are most common, with the occasional New Traditional. Most single family homes sell for between $70,000 and $200,000. That's low for the Hickory metropolitan area, where the average home price is about $400,000. Several empty lots are still available, fetching between $10,000 and $35,000, based on their size and proximity to Downtown Hickory.Recreation centers and an upcoming walkway
Ridgeview Recreation Center is located near the heart of the neighborhood, its construction spearheaded by residents in the 1950s to give children a safe place to play. The recreation center presently has a full-size indoor basketball court and pool tables. The Brown Penn Recreation Center is next door and geared toward children 15 and under who are interested in playing basketball, football and other sports. Kiwanis Park provides more sports fields, along with playgrounds, a splash pad and a long slide. There’s also a planned walkway, the Historic Ridgeview Walk, which will link the neighborhood to Downtown Hickory. Markers along the trail will commemorate people and places of significance to the community.Grade schools, colleges and a lasting source of Ridgeview pride
Many students start at W. M. Jenkins Elementary, rated B-plus by Niche. They can move up to B-minus-rated Grandview Middle before finishing at Hickory High, which earns a B. Hickory High’s athletic programs have received attention in recent years, the football team and boys tennis team winning the 3A state championships. Lenoir-Rhyne University, a private Lutheran school with undergraduate, graduate and seminary programs, has a campus about a 2-mile drive from most homes. Catawba Valley Community College is 4 miles down US Highway 70. It offers a furniture academy that partners with local businesses to prepare students for careers in furniture manufacturing. The neighborhood’s former Ridgeview High School remains a point of pride of the community, the football team earning the nickname “The Untouchables” for its undefeated and unscored-upon 1964 season. “Locals want to keep that story alive and make people aware that it’s part of Ridgeview’s history,” Smith says.Educational events
Various events take place at the Ridgeview Branch Library. “The library presents story times, STEAM activities for children, programming for adults and community-wide events,” says Sarah Killian, communications specialist with the City of Hickory. At the end of each February, the Ridgeview Recreation Center hosts a Black History Month Living Wax Museum, where volunteers dress up as various historic African American figures.Buses and convenient access to highways
The Greenway Public Transportation bus carries commuters to destinations including downtown. Buses typically run every hour, Monday through Saturday. The interchange between Interstate 40 and US Highway 321 is under a 3-minute drive away, putting Ridgeview closer to the highways than most other Hickory neighborhoods. Residents on the north side of the neighborhood are within a half-mile walk of the shops, restaurants and events of Downtown Hickory.Shopping by the highway and eating out downtown
Walmart Neighborhood Market, Big Lots, car dealerships and various stores line US Highway 70, within minutes of most homes. Valley Hills Mall welcomes shoppers to explore two stories of shops, including JCPenney and Hot Topic. For eating out, residents have plenty of local options. Ridgeview’s own Dos Amigos serves up Mexican favorites from tamales to margaritas, while John Boyz Cafe is known for soul food. Downtown Hickory offers an array of restaurants and shops, such as Taste Full Beans, an artsy coffee shop, and Olde Hickory Tap Room, known for craft beers and pub fare.
