South Hickory features more open space, less commercial development
Bakers Mountain rises from the terrain of South Hickory, and its peak is visible throughout the community just outside of Hickory, North Carolina. The mountain’s forested ridges match much of the landscape of South Hickory, a blend of subdivisions, woods and farmland. South Hickory residents live in a community that’s increasingly popular with homebuyers. Hickory sits about an hour from Charlotte, North Carolina’s largest city and one of the nation’s banking hubs, and Boone, a mountainside college town, and the growth of those two cities has led many to discover the middle ground of Hickory. “We’re working with Charlotte’s overflow and we’re working with Boone’s overflow,” says Hope Rogers, a Hickory-based broker with Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Foothills. “Once people see Hickory, it’s such a sweet, small space, they’re like ‘Oh my gosh.’ It’s affordable, there’s a lake, it’s a drive to Charlotte and it’s a drive to the mountains.” South Hickory is within 15 minutes of Lake Hickory and the city’s downtown, but home prices tend to be lower than lakefront markets and the landscape is less developed than the center of Hickory.
The landscape transitions from suburban to rural
Medium and large subdivisions are grouped to the west and south of the neighboring Mountain View community. Ranch homes and Colonial- and Tudor-inspired New Traditional houses fill the tree-lined lots in these developments. On the west end of the community, ranches, split-levels and the occasional farmhouse are spread out across the less developed landscape. South Hickory homes usually come with roomy properties, with a median lot size of roughly three-quarters of an acre. The community’s median price is $350,000, less than the national median.
South Hickory’s CAP Index Crime Score is 2 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.
Children zoned to Catawba County Schools
Kids can attend Mountain View Elementary, located in South Hickory, and Jacobs Fork Middle, which is just south of the community. Niche gives both schools A-minus grades. Next to Jacobs Fork Middle, Fred T. Foard High scores a B-plus. Students at Foard can take career-oriented courses in business, early childhood education and graphic design.
Climbing Bakers Mountain and visiting waterfront parks
Bakers Mountain Park is the gateway to the 1,780-foot summit, the highest point in Catawba County. Hikers can leave their cars at the park and walk a nearly 3-mile loop to reach a platform overlooking the hills and forests around Hickory. There are roughly 6 miles of trails throughout the park, with one trail tracing the stories found in children’s books and others providing bird-watching opportunities.
Other parks stand along the banks of streams running through South Hickory. At Henry Fork River Park, Catawba Valley Youth Soccer Association hosts games and academies at the park’s 10 soccer fields. There’s a canoe launch along the bank of Henry Fork, and the tributary winds westward through the community, passing an abandoned mill village used as the filming location for District 12 in “The Hunger Games.” To the south, the nearly 3-mile Woodland Loop Trail guides hikers and mountain bikers through the forests of Jacob Fork Park, which also has a canoe launch.
Stores and restaurants along 127 in Mountain View
Locals can head to the neighboring community of Mountain View for retail and dining. Shopping centers along North Carolina highway 127 feature Food Lion, Lowes Foods and Northwest Hardware Co. About a dozen restaurants line the highway, varying from chain eateries to Hannah’s BBQ South, which combines smoked meats with Tex-Mex dishes like burritos and quesadillas. South Hickory residents live no more than 12 miles from downtown Hickory, home to rows of restaurants and a collection of furniture shops. Frye Regional Medical Center is a few blocks north.
Nearby highways lead to Asheville, Charlotte, Winston-Salem
Just northeast of the community, Interstate 40 intersects U.S. Route 321. I-40 extends east and west across the state, connecting to Asheville and Winston-Salem, both about 75 miles away. Meanwhile, drivers can use Route 321 to travel 60 miles to Charlotte, where passengers can reach nearly 200 destinations from Charlotte Douglas International Airport.
