Viewmont blends small-town feel with downtown energy
The Hickory community of Viewmont, like the city itself, is growing rapidly while maintaining all its charm. The area includes Downtown Hickory, where new businesses and housing options crop up every year. “It’s very walkable and there’s great access to restaurants. It has a small town feel but there are a lot of places to go and things to do,” says Lori Marshall, a Realtor with Cooper Southern Properties who sells throughout the area.
Most homes are renovated townhouses built in the late 1970s
Most homes here are renovated townhouses built in the 1970s. Prices range from $150,000 to $300,000. Some single-family homes and condos are in the neighborhood and rarely go on the market. When they do, a three-bedroom condo can cost around $280,000 and a four-bedroom single-family home can cost around $370,000. According to the CAP Index, Viewmont rates 7 out of 10, three points higher than the national average.
Dining and shopping options center in and around 2nd Avenue
Union Square is the neighborhood’s, and city’s, main shopping and dining area. The outdoor retail hub spans a couple of blocks near 2nd Avenue and features dozens of local shops and restaurants. Hatch Sandwich Bar is a local favorite for its large menu and casual atmosphere. More stores, restaurants and services are along Second Street, including Lowe’s Foods, where residents pick up groceries.
Trails, parks and Lake Hickory offer outdoor recreation
CityWalk is a popular paved walking trail through downtown, connecting to shops, restaurants and the university. Glenn C. Hilton, Jr. Memorial Park is near the neighborhood and features two playgrounds, a paved walking trail, a 24-hole disc golf course and a canoe launch into Lake Hickory, which flanks the park. Lake Hickory is also a popular spot for fishing. Other recreation spots nearby are Hickory Foundation YMCA, which offers a pool, fitness center and roller-skating rink and the private Lake Hickory County Club, which has a golf course, tennis courts and a pool.
Local schools and Lenoir Rhyne University serve the area
The schools assigned to the neighborhood are Viewmont Elementary, which has a C-plus rating on Niche; Northview Middle, which has a B-plus; and Hickory High, which has a B rating. Hickory High is the only high school in Catawba County to offer orchestra. Lenoir-Rhyne University is on the neighborhood’s southeast side and is a private, four-year school that offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees. The school is affiliated with the North Carolina Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA).
Live music, farmers markets and family movies at Union Square
Union Square hosts multiple regular events throughout the year. The Sails is a live concert series that takes place on Friday evenings in May, June and September. “Tons of people come downtown for it, bring their lawn chairs and enjoy the music,” Marshall says. The city’s Oktoberfest features beer tents, food vendors, live music, and Kidsfest, a family-friendly option, with a petting farm and bounce houses. More frequent events include the farmers’ market, which takes place on Saturdays and Wednesdays, and Saturday Screenings, where attendees enjoy family-friendly movies outdoors on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month.
Second Street connects residents to major highways and I-40
Second Street becomes State Route 127 just south of the neighborhood; the highway connects to other major roadways including Interstate 40. Greenway buses stop along 2nd Street and other thoroughfares, especially on the neighborhood’s south side.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
