More than its unusual name
What’s in a name? Well, when it comes to the unincorporated community of Horneytown, North Carolina, much more than a passing snicker. “It’s one of the more rural areas in Forsyth County, although it’s sandwiched between High Point and Winston-Salem,” says Chris Weavil, the Director of Forsyth County Parks & Recreation. “It’s just off of Interstate 74, so it has great access to the surrounding area. It’s a great little place to grow up.” True Homes Realtor Nadia Hurtado agrees that its location is a large part of the neighborhood’s appeal. “This close to High Point is basically the center of the Piedmont Triad, and that’s why a lot of people and families like it.” Horneytown is close to the amenities offered in the more urban locales surrounding it, but has its own collection of quaint local businesses, including several stores that proudly bear the community’s odd name. Horneytown’s home prices attract homebuyers’ attention, too; Hurtado says they’re low compared to cities like Charlotte. “Every place has its boom and I think that Kernersville is passing the boom towards High Point right now, which could make this area the next big thing.”
From acre-plus lots to new suburban developments
Horneytown has a population of about 1,400, and most residents are owners rather than renters. On average, properties are just under 1 acre, but there are some ranch-style and Traditional homes that overlook plots much larger, and some Craftsman-inspired new builds perched on slices of land much smaller. In subdivisions like Rich Fork Heights, three- to five-bedroom new builds with attached garages can range in price between $300,000 and $500,000. Serenity Pointe, a subdivision closer to the west side of Horneytown, features larger Colonial-inspired homes that can sell for as high as $600,000. But prices in the wider neighborhood can dip as low as $140,000.

Bacon burgers, bluegrass and beyond
Within a mile or two of most homes, the intersection of Horneytown and High Point Roads boasts several businesses proudly bearing the community’s name, including Horneytown Country Store, Horneytown Guns & Ammo and Horneytown Tire. Tucker’s Grill, nearby, opts for a different namesake. But the no-frills American diner, Horneytown’s flagship eatery, has been a staple in the local food scene for decades. It features menu items like bacon pimento cheeseburgers, chili dogs and hearty soup specials. A few miles northwest of home, locals can grab everyday necessities from Little Cedar Grocery & General Store. The shop gets busy on Monday nights when it hosts live bluegrass bands. Zane’s Clodbuster Farm is a little farther northwest; the working farm grows a variety of produce, from strawberries to soybeans. Visitors can buy jarred goods, glass-bottled beverages and artisanal creations at the Old Farm Store. The farm draws crowds from all over Forsyth County each fall for festivities from pumpkin picking and hayrides to a 60-acre corn maze. For big box retailers, residents can head southeast toward High Point. Along High Point Road, within about 4 miles of home, there’s Walmart Supercenter, Harris Teeter and Publix.

Union Cross Park
Union Cross Park is about 5 miles northwest and offers all kinds of opportunities for outdoor recreation. It was built on a decommissioned Air Force station in the mid-1970s; Weavil says it’s the first his department envisioned. “The radar tower that was there in the 1950s is still standing,” he says. “Today, the park’s biggest attraction is the 1,700-foot-long walking path, a non-paved surface people love to walk on.” Beyond the crushed-rock path, the park also offers several lighted sports fields/courts, a playground and a picnic shelter.

Horneytown offers a quick commute to great shops and restaurants in High Point.
Easy commuting around the Triad
“The neighborhood is close to Interstate 74, but it’s not exposed to the high traffic. As far as accessibility, it works well for commuters,” says Hurtado. I-74 runs along the north side of Horneytown, connecting northwest into Winston-Salem, about 15 miles away. The drive can take 20 minutes, depending on traffic. Kernersville is even closer, just 8 miles north, via North Carolina Route 66. High Point is less than 6 miles southeast down North Main Street. “Another thing about commuters is that because we are so low on the south side of the Triad, I do have clients that work in Charlotte or the areas around there. They’ll live here and commute there because the homes here usually cost far less than in Charlotte,” says Hurtado. Charlotte is about 90 miles southwest. The drive takes nearly an hour and a half in light traffic conditions.
