West Highland Park offers a leafy lifestyle on the north shore

Vibrant parks, top-notch schools and easy access to public transportation are just the tip of the iceberg in West Highland Park, an upscale suburban community on the north shore of Lake Michigan. The leafy neighborhood is close to the renowned Ravinia Festival concert venue and several Metra stations. Nancy Karp, a West Highland Park resident and broker with @Properties, says the area attracts buyers seeking an established community close to Highland Park 's amenities. “There’s a nice mix of homes here. There are some starter homes all the way up to luxury properties,” she says. “There are sidewalks throughout most of the neighborhood, and it’s very dog-friendly. There are people walking their dogs all day long here.” West Highland Park receives a CAP Index Crime Score of 2 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.

Diverse housing options at a lower cost than East Highland Park

West Highland Park homes come in a broad range of styles and prices. “It’s kind of a mixed area unlike East Highland Park , which is more luxury homes and more expensive,” Karp says. Manicured lawns and mature trees provide a park-like setting, and many neighborhoods feature sidewalks. “There are sub-neighborhoods, and we tend to refer to the neighborhoods by the school they go to,” Karp says, such as Sherwood Forest and Red Oak.Buyers can find renovated early 20th-century Colonial Revivals, Tudor Revivals and bungalows alongside midcentury modern ranch-style homes and split-levels. Homes built after the 1990s often sport New Traditional or contemporary design, and condos and townhouses are also common. The median price for a single-family home is $750,000, which is lower than the East Highland Park median of approximately $830,000. The median townhouse price is $740,000, higher than East Highland Park’s $450,000. “If you compare this area to the rest of the country, it’s probably relatively affluent, but compared to the rest of the north shore, we’re not at the top of the heap,” Karp says.

Plentiful parks and nature preserves near Lake Michigan

“Highland Park has a really huge park district because we’re on Lake Michigan,” Karp says. “We have a beach and we have a huge facility [Recreation Center of Highland Park] that’s kind of on the north side where you can have a full gym membership with a pool, an indoor track and the senior center.” Adjacent to the recreation center, The Preserve of Highland Park is a former golf course that has been transformed into a natural area with 5 miles of trails, wildlife habitats and nature-based play areas. “We also have a huge pool [Hidden Creek Aqua Park] in Highland Park. That’s a big draw too,” she says. “I remember when we first moved here, the kids were so excited about the water park.” Just south of the community, the Chicago Botanic Garden features nine islands that sprawl across 385 acres.

Easy access to Metra and U.S. Route 41

Highland Park has four Metra stations along the Union Pacific North line which connects to downtown Chicago about 30 miles away. Pace bus stops are along major roads like Park and Central Avenues. “In general, Highland Park is very north-south along the lake and everything is easy to get to. You just hop on [U.S. Route] 41 and you can find whatever you want,” Karp says. Highland Park Hospital is in the neighborhood.

Highly rated public schools in West Highland Park

Kids may attend schools in two districts. North Shore School District 112 serves students in kindergarten through eighth grade, while teens head to schools in Township High School District 113. Kids may start at Indian Trail Elementary School, which is graded A by Niche, before heading to the A-minus-rated Edgewood Middle School. Highland Park High School, graded A-plus, offers dual credit classes and college and career pathways at Lake County High School Technology Campus.

Ravinia Festival draws nearly 400,000 visitors over the summer

Ravinia Festival hosts a near-daily concert series that runs from June to September. “It’s big names and it’s a big deal that goes on all summer,” Karp says. “The Chicago Symphony is in residence during part of the summer, but there’s pop acts, jazz, you name it.” The Port Clinton Art Festival and the Festival of Fine Arts bring hundreds of artists to the city each summer. “We also have the Taste of Highland Park event where they have bands and a bunch of food vendors,” Karp says. “It’s a great time to get out and see your neighbors.”

Local restaurants nearby, more options in downtown Highland Park

Retail and restaurants in West Highland Park are not as densely populated as those on the east side, but there are still some local favorites. “Bluegrass is on this side and that’s an awesome place,” Karp says. “It’s kind of got a southern vibe and they have specials during Mardi Gras and things like that.” Ordo is another popular option that serves up a fusion of Central Asian and Eastern European flavors. Jewel-Osco has groceries nearby. Residents are also close to two major shopping and dining destinations. “There’s the main downtown Highland Park shopping district, but there’s another shopping district called the Ravinia District and there are restaurants, shops, food trucks on Thursdays, and a farmers market.”
