Central Hillsboro is a short drive from restaurants and major corporations
By city standards, Central Hillsboro was already in a convenient location. However, it has become a truly sought-after location as Hillsboro develops into a corporate hub for the Portland metro area. "It's like a little Silicon Valley," says Realtor Gary Potts with the Portland Southwest team of John L. Scott Real Estate. "Hillsboro is probably the most inviting city in the Portland area to multinational corporations and new businesses." Among the tech giants, Intel's Hillsboro campus — one of the company's largest — is less than 5 miles north of Central Hillsboro. Small businesses are also booming, in the form of restaurants, bars and other eateries in the downtown neighborhood. "A lot of people come here from California cities like San Francisco to spend less time in their car," says Potts, who has sold homes in the Portland area since 1999. "Here, they have a short commute, so they can actually enjoy their life and all the restaurants in town."

Downtown bungalows and established suburbs
Despite the area's growth, the Central Hillsboro streetscape has remained relatively unchanged. "You might find some new developments around town, but in this area, you've got downtown and established suburbs around it," Potts says. "Most communities have been around for a while." The older and smaller options keep neighborhood prices relatively lower than in nearby Beaverton or in Portland proper. 1930s bungalows and 1960s ranch-style homes range from under $300,000 to about $500,000. Most sit on midsize lots shaded by mature trees within walking distance of downtown restaurants. In the suburbs east of downtown, midsize ranch-style, bi-level and new traditional homes on spacious lawns range from $500,000 to $700,000. Large suburban options, including midcentury cabins on forested one-acre properties, can cost $700,000 to around $1 million.

Downtown Hillsboro's growing culinary scene
The west end of the neighborhood is downtown Hillsboro, the city hub for small businesses. "People in this neighborhood don't go to Beaverton or Portland for restaurants," Potts says. "They have lots of restaurants, outdoor patios and other places to eat and drink." Downtown showcases all kinds of cuisine, from Pizzario on East Main Street to artisan cafes like Collective Market on 3rd Avenue and pastries at Blue Moon Bakery on Baseline Street. Hillsboro Downtown Station puts local diversity on the menu. The food hall has a parking lot full of food trucks, including Pinch of Spice for Indian fare, Chilean barbecue at Cachai Po and Vietnamese at Pho Sang. Downtown has grocery stores and specialty markets like Super Mercado Mexico. Sunset Esplanade, on state Route 8, offers larger stores like Target and Lowe's. There's also a Costco a few miles north next to Hillsboro Airport.
