A quiet community escape 14 miles west of Portland
Home to the oldest cemetery in Oregon, West Union was settled in the 1840s by Oregon Trail pioneers led by David Thomas Lenox. Today, West Union residents live on the hills and flat plains in a small cluster of neighborhoods between Cornelius Pass Road and 185th Avenue. “This area is your gateway straight west to the beach or east to Portland if you hop on Sunset Highway,” says Steve Roesch, broker and owner of NextHome Portland/Salem and Vancouver, Washington. “What also drives a lot of folks to the area are the big businesses like Nike and Intel. Both have campuses nearby.” Rural homes off Old Pass Road with large lots often have pole barns and plenty of storage. Liberty High School sits next to a few industrial wholesale and supply buildings on the west side of town, and much of the northern part of the neighborhood takes advantage of the landscape for industrial farming. McMenamins Rock Creek Tavern is in the northernmost tip of the neighborhood, and the Tanasbourne Town Center and Village has dozens of shopping and dining locations off Evergreen Parkway. Students attend schools within both the Hillsboro School District, which is graded an overall B on Niche, and the Beaverton School District, graded an A.

Pioneer history in West Union, Oregon
The West Union Baptist Church was built in 1853 and still stands today as the oldest Baptist society and Protestant church building west of the Rocky Mountains. The church overlooks the oldest cemetery in Oregon, the final resting place of settlers who lived in West Union nearly 200 years ago. West Union is the location of Washington County’s first school district. Those remaining schoolhouses fall within the Hillsboro School District today.

Rural and suburban homes in West Union
Most homes in West Union are located on the southeast side of town within the Rock Creek neighborhood. “The Rock Creek area is an established neighborhood with homes from the 70s and 80s in mid-century modern styles,” Roesch says. “Houses that back up to the golf course have a lot of value, and they’ll sometimes have private pools overlooking the fairways.” Though not part of a Homeowners’ Association, Rock Creek Country Club resides within the community, and the streets here are lined with lush landscaping of native wildflowers, shrubs and trees. Homes in the Rock Creek neighborhood tend to cost between $650,000 and $1 million. Rural homes with an acre or two of land in the hillside can range in price. Two-bedroom ranch homes may cost between $475,000 and $600,000, while farmhouse-inspired estates can cost upwards of $1 million.

Poynter Middle School on the other side of the airport, which includes class electives like creative writing and an introduction to engineering. Liberty High School has dozens of after-school clubs and activities, including an Aerospace Club, which takes place at Hillsboro Airport. All three of these schools earn a B-plus rating on Niche.

Commutes to downtown and the Portland International Airport
Though West Union is about 14 miles from Portland’s bustling downtown, the Oregon Zoo and Portland’s Japanese Garden, traffic tends to get backed up on U.S. Route 26. Portland International Airport (PDS) is 26 miles east of West Union for residents who are traveling out of town. Providence St. Vincent Medical Center is about 10 miles away down Route 26 in case of an emergency, and to get around, locals can hop on MAX Blue Line buses along stops on Evergreen Parkway.
McMenamins Rock Creek Tavern & Tanasbourne Town Center
For those willing to drive about 3 miles up Old Cornelius Pass Road, the McMenamins Rock Creek Tavern is a storybook-worthy, secluded outpost with live music, shuffleboard and classic Northwest-style pub fare. They also have an extensive on-tap list for those after-work hangouts or weekend date nights. Helvetia Farm Market is a nice spot to hang out and buy local produce and goods. The Meating Place butcher shop and its cafe across the parking lot are popular among locals who enjoy fresh cuts and a good meal. “Shopping is big here. People come from all over to shop at Tanasbourne,” Roesch says. “From big box stores to little restaurants, this is a shopping mecca.” Locals flock to Tanasbourne Town Center and The Streets of Tanasbourne, a large outdoor shopping mall with dozens of retail spaces and restaurants like Best Buy, Target and Chick-fil-A. For something sweet, head to Crumbl next to Trader Joe’s for specialty cookies. The Prime Tap House on 106th Avenue is a beer hall and event space with experiences like a Paint Night, where friends drink and paint together.

Indoor and outdoor West Union recreation
West Union has a lot of natural outdoor spaces and indoor recreation to explore, from hiking and cycling along the Rock Creek trail past Bethany Lake, to hitting golf balls down the Rock Creek Country Club’s fairways - if you're a member. Families can spend a day at Top Golf and compete in a friendly game of Angry Birds or race around at the indoor Go-Kart track at K1 Amusements. At Rock Creek Park, kids can run around on the large playground or play a game of pickup basketball. The Rock Creek West Soccer Fields sit beneath a string of power lines at Tualatin Hills Park. “Oregon likes to use all the outdoor space it can, so when utility zones like powerlines go up, they create parks, trails and green spaces to join them,” Roesch says. “Every Saturday from spring to fall, you’ll see tons of people there to watch the kids play. If you like to coach soccer for your kids, you’ll end up there.” Bethany Lake Park behind the soccer fields is a nice little fishing spot, with paved biking and walking trails for dog walkers and those who enjoy an evening stroll. Gordon Faber Recreation Complex across the highway is home to Ron Tonkin Field, where fans can watch the Hillsboro Hops play baseball. Portland Community College's Rock Creek location also has a massive sports complex, letting locals and students alike to get outside and exercise.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
