Stately homes surround a chateau in Carolands
Named for the Gilded Age-era Carolands Chateau, Hillsborough’s Carolands neighborhood still shares in the estate’s opulence. The community was developed atop much of the chateau’s 554 acres of property, and its streets now feature both palatial residences and smaller single-story homes. “It’s one of the nicest parts of Upper Hillsborough,” says local Realtor Phil Chen of Christie's International Real Estate. Fashionable houses and direct access to Interstate 280 contribute to Carolands’ strong appeal more than a century after its founding.
Caroland Chateau forms the central landmark of Carolands, and really sets the tone of the area.

Golfing and garden walks in Carolands
The neighborhood is surrounded by opportunities for outdoor outings, from hiking to strolling through gardens. The Carolands Chateau, built in 1914 by the heiress to the Pullman railroad company, offers tours through a lottery system. Winners can explore a 98-room, 65,000-square-foot mansion built in the French Classical style as well as its extensive gardens, patterned after those of the Palace of Versailles. The Sawyer Camp Trail, located four blocks west of the chateau, takes hikers and cyclists down tree-shaded paths running parallel to the Lower Crystal Springs Reservoir. The Crystal Springs Golf Course sits along this trail and within the larger Crystal Springs wildlife refuge, inviting members of the public to play on an 18-hole course in the shadow of the Santa Cruz Mountains. The private Burlingame Country Club, just beyond this neighborhood’s northern frontier, shares in Carolands’ long, rich history. Founded in 1893, this club includes an 18-hole golf course as well as a tennis facility, swimming pool and a clubhouse for socializing and dining.
