Midcentury roots and abundant green space
Hillside evokes history, roughly 15 miles west of downtown Chicago. It’s a former limestone producer and the final resting spot of Al Capone, but it’s better known as a midcentury boomtown, when Interstate 290 was installed, bringing in a new wave of residents. Retail destinations popped up to meet growing demand. Local housing stock still reflects that era, and I-290 is still there, too – although the commercial offerings have changed, transitioning away from shopping malls to clusters of big box stores. Call it a neighborhood that can keep up with the times, with plenty of outdoor recreation opportunities to boot. “People in this area like being close to the woods,” says Realtor Bryan Bomba, who heads up the Bryan Bomba Group with @properties. The Fullersburg Woods and the Salt Creek Woods are to the south, while the York Woods are to the west.

Homes consistently priced in the $300k range
Home prices are consistently in the $300,000 range, giving stability to the neighborhood. Whether a property is on the lower or higher end of that spectrum often depends on its age or level of renovation. Even newer homes from the 2010s are built to resemble the streamlined midcentury ranches and bungalows that are the predominant style here. Brick facades, front stoops, gabled roofs and a sprawling profile are common. For those who may need a little more room, there are bi-level properties throughout the neighborhood, adding some height around the otherwise low-profile houses they’re often placed next to. The residential grid is densely built out, but the connecting sidewalks and wide streets make them feel spacious. Residents keep their lawns and porches decorated with personalized touches, like steel decorative pinwheels or lion statuary.

Manufacturing program at Proviso West High
School rankings are consistent, too, adding to the neighborhood’s appeal. Hillside Elementary, Westchester Intermediate and Westchester Middle all earn a B from Niche. Together these schools cover kindergarten through 8th grade, and each has a population of around 350 students. Proviso West High earns a C-minus, and in 2020 it introduced a manufacturing program for students who want to pursue a career in the trades.

Forest preserves and smaller parks
Hillside, as the name suggests, is covered in green space, from the rambling cemeteries and forest preserves on the south side to the busy neighborhood parks dotted throughout. Eisenhower Park is a popular choice for residents, and it includes pools at Adventure Bay Water Park as well as athletic fields and courts. Just below Eisenhower Park runs the main stem of Illinois Prairie Path, a nearly 60-mile trail that maps the historical path of the Chicago Aurora & Elgin Railroad. Fresh Meadow Golf Club sits on the south side, featuring an 18-hole course with bodies of water and a golf learning center.
Hillside residents are free to use the parks and exercise facilities connected by the IPP.

Fast casual food and locally owned eateries
Butterfield Road is lined with Mexican restaurants and other fast casual eateries, as well as conveniences like Walgreens. Along Grant Memorial Highway are several stops for errands, such as Aldi and Target locations, plus banks and auto repair businesses. Roosevelt Road on the south side is known for small locally owned restaurants, like Emilio's Tapas Bar Restaurant, where residents can sample traditional Spanish small plates in an artistically colorful space.

Summer events and historic cemeteries to tour
Summer stays busy at Hillside Commons Park, summer stays busy. There’s an open market with local food, drink and craft vendors, a car show and live music concerts. To really soak in local history, visit both Mount Carmel and Queen of Heaven Catholic Cemeteries. Mount Carmel is perhaps most known for the grave of Al Capone, but it was the first graveyard in Hillside, and one of the first in general for the Chicago suburbs. As for Queen of Heaven, the main mausoleum is a stunning example of Gothic Revival architecture with a gallery of stained glass and carved wood. In the west wing is an art gallery with an international display of artists and architectural designers.
