Dugspur offers a quiet pastoral lifestyle, 70 miles from Roanoke
Dugspur is in the Blue Ridge Mountains and offers a bucolic lifestyle, about 70 miles outside Roanoke. “People move here to get away,” says Keith Clark, a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services Mountain Sky Properties, who has nearly 10 years of experience in the industry. “They get peace and quiet with some creek and mountain views.” Dugspur is mainly farmland with access to nearby towns through U.S. Route 221, which cuts through the area. Residents here have the tranquil atmosphere of a scenic mountain getaway, while still having access to shopping, dining and entertainment.
Parks and recreation throughout Carroll County
Among Dugspur’s rolling hills and stretches of farmland are campgrounds and RV sites, such as Jillbilly’s Moonlight Hill. This farm, campsite and event space offers firepits, a pizza oven and, on a clear night, a chance to see the Aurora Borealis. The Beaver Dam Creek Trail, 9 miles away near Hillsville, is nearly a mile and offers hikers a chance to see native birds, snakes, frogs and wildflowers. Residents head to Claytor Lake State Park, 38 miles north, for boating and swimming. The park has a marina on Claytor Lake and offers boat rentals and supplies. Fishing is permitted throughout the park, which is stocked with bass, catfish, muskie and walleye. The park also has nature trails and camping areas.
Vacation homes in Dugspur’s mountainous landscape
Hills and valleys define Dugspur's mountainous landscape. Most homes are situated in valleys on large lots, surrounded by thick greenery or farmland. Homes are in the minimal traditional and ranch-styles, ranging from $130,000 to $250,000. “It’s a good mixture of part-time and full-time residents,” says Clark. “There’s a good amount of properties that aren’t lived on, hunting properties ... or recreational that they’ll eventually build on. The people buying out there usually buy a home as a secondary property. There are a lot of cows out there, too.” Since many homes are set below hills, flooding can be an issue, especially for those near creeks and rivers. “If you’re near Big Reed Island Creek, that probably comes on up on a heavy rain,” says Clark. “That’s only if you're near the water.” The CAP Index Crime Score in Dugspur is a 1 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.
