A private community on Hilton Head Island
In Hilton Head Island’s Spanish Wells community, the focus is on living a “lowcountry lifestyle.” That, says Randall Moody, a real estate advisor with Keller Williams Realty, is what makes the community a destination for many. But what does it mean? “It’s not pretentious,” Moody says. “There are people here who like nice things, but they are here for the coastal environment. You can see big oak trees. You can jump on a boat and go fishing. You can jump on a paddleboard in the marsh. You can play golf. You can do all the things you want to do.” Spanish Wells is a private neighborhood, but unlike similar communities on the island, it is not gated. And while the Spanish Wells Club provides social opportunities, it is optional to join. Those are signs of the community having a low-key attitude, Moody says. It wants residents to explore the island’s parks and restaurants, then return to a comfortable, quiet home.
The neighborhood is quiet, offering peaceful streets and a relaxing atmosphere.
Residents often spend time boating and fishing.

Spanish Wells Club carries a relaxed attitude
Spanish Wells Club has a 9-hole golf course with no tee times, something that appeals to a younger crowd. “It’s a place where people can take their dog out on the golf course,” says Bill Vaughan, the general manager and director of golf at Spanish Wells Club. “We have embraced the laid back-ness. Some people don’t like it. I had someone ask why we were letting men walk around wearing hats. I said, ‘We also have board members in flip-flops.’” The club also provides members with water access and a tennis center. Just outside of the community, Sky Pirate Parasail offers views of the island’s waters from the air. Coligny Beach Park has earned accolades from Trip Advisor and Parents magazine for being one of the top family beaches in the U.S. Sea Pines Forest Preserve offers guided tours of its woods and wetlands. Lowcountry Celebration Park has a pirate ship-themed playground in memory of Captain William Hilton.
