Hiwassee is a private, farming community
Amid the Blue Ridge Mountains, the small agricultural community of Hiwassee offers private living with access to outdoor activities. Part of Pulaski County, which was established in 1839, this region is known for its vast farmland, forests and mountain peaks. Hiwassee also sits next to the New River, which weaves through the landscape to Claytor Lake.
Hiking and biking trails, nearby playground
The New River Trail is a 57-mile hiking path that follows abandoned railroad tracks. Parking for the trail is available in Hiwassee along state Route 693. The New River that borders the community is deep enough to support boating and kayaking. There’s also Harry E. O'Dell Memorial Park nearby, which offers a playground and a multipurpose field. Just to the south, the Hoover Mountain Bike Complex features 4 miles of mountain biking trails ranging from easy to moderate difficulty. The Blue Ridge Mountains that dominate the region also boast an additional 150 miles of hiking trails.
Homes with land, waterfront properties available
There are older Craftsman homes and newer ranch-style houses available. Properties are scattered throughout and typically come with 5 to 10 acres of land. There’s also a small number of waterfront homes along the New River, some of which feature private boat docks. Homes tend to sell for $180,000 to $300,000, though waterfront homes can cost more.
Commuting via Route 693, I-81
Commuters can take state Route 693 to nearby cities like Pulaski, 11 miles away, and Christiansburg, 22 miles away. Interstate 81 access is 7 miles away, facilitating regional travel. The LewisGale Hospital in Pulaski is 12 miles away. The closest airport, Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport, is 61 miles away.

Students may start at Snowville Elementary, which earns a B from Niche, before going to the C-plus-rated Pulaski Middle. Pulaski County High gets a B-minus and has a career and technical education department with courses in fields like medicine and agriculture.

Residents can drive to Pulaski for shopping and dining. Along East Main Street, there’s a Food Lion and Food City for essentials. There are also locally owned restaurants like Compadres with Mexican entrees and Tha Dawg House, which has been serving hot dogs and sandwiches since 2010.
