Long before Hobe Sound was the quaint little beach town it is today, Spanish explorers named the native Jaega-occupied lands “Jobe” or “Jove,” after the Roman god Jupiter. Located on the banks of the Indian River, halfway between Port St. Lucie and West Palm Beach, Hobe Sound exploded after railroads came to the area in the early 1900s. Today, the Indian River and coast are a huge parts of the town’s identity, with a series of canals extending into the community for a “boat-in-your-backyard neighborhood” vibe. “Hobe Sound is still a quintessential Florida beach town,” says Patricia Olson, a Realtor with RE/MAX of Stuart who sells throughout Martin County. “It’s still kind of untouched, in the best way possible. The beaches are beautiful and not built up; there aren’t any ocean-front condos. When you go downtown, it’s mostly local businesses.”

Hobe Sound has a variety of homes for nearly any taste and price point. On the north side of town, the 55-plus Cambridge at Heritage Ridge South community is filled with neat rows of manufactured homes starting around $140,000. Modest single-story and two-story homes across different architectural styles like Mediterranean, ranch and Key West are sprinkled throughout. Multi-million dollar estates can be found near waterways and canals to the east and in the Medalist subdivision. New townhouses have popped up in the area next to the old Picture City. Peck Lake Park, local favorite for nature
Locals enjoy nature at Peck Lake Park within the Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge. The area contains undeveloped beaches and is one of the most active sea turtle nesting areas in the Southeastern United States. The park has several habitats. Manatee and alligator sightings are common. The town's community redevelopment plan aims to preserve wetlands, strengthen agriculture, and create livable communities to ultimately make a more sustainable area. Over 90% graduation rate at Martin County Schools
Hobe Sound is a part of the Martin County School District, which participates in the school choice program. The district serves just over 18,000 students across 29 schools and has an A-minus rating from Niche. The district’s three high schools had a graduation rate of about 90% in 2023, higher than Florida’s average of 88%. Martin County Schools was named Cambridge International’s Small District of the Year in 2023, with some schools offering grade-level specific Cambridge programs.

Annual Festival of the Arts had humble beginnings
Hobe Sound holds an annual Festival of the Arts in early February. It began in the early 2000s as a small gathering of artists and has grown into a showcase of dozens of crafters and vendors. The Hobe Sound Farmers Market started in 2020 as a pumpkin patch. The owners, desiring a year-round iteration of their successful market, held their grand opening in 2021 with weekly Saturday and Sunday morning markets ever since.

Two highways right down the middle
Southeast Dixie Highway and U.S. Route 1 run directly through Hobe Sound before joining at its southern edge. Interstate 95 and Florida’s Turnpike are about 8 miles west. Martin County Public Transit provides bus service through the town. The nearest commercial airport, Palm Beach International Airport, is about 37 miles away.
Decrease in property crime
The Martin County Sheriff’s Office handles law enforcement for Hobe Sound. According to the Florida Legislature Office of Economic and Demographic Research, the violent crime rate in Martin County remained the same from 2019 to 2020, compared with an increase of 0.4% across all of Florida. The county saw a decrease in property crime of 17% over the same time period, compared with an 11.8% decrease statewide.
