East Millcreek is an established suburb at the base of Mount Olympus, 11 miles from downtown Salt Lake City. It’s a residential area with sweeping mountain views and close proximity to major highways. “There’s so much access to things, like the mountains nearby, but you can also hop on the highway and reach downtown quickly,” says Jazmin Adamson, a Realtor with Align Complete Real Estate Services and Salt Lake City native. Historically a mill neighborhood, East Millcreek is also home to the Baldwin Radio Factory, built in 1922 by Nathaniel Baldwin, the inventor of headphones. Today the building is a creative space, housing art studios, a café, a small furniture store and a yoga studio. Baldwin also pioneered the construction of bungalows along Evergreen Avenue in the 1920s, making it a popular home style in the area.

Playtime at Pumpkin Park
At Evergreen Park, kids can play on a structure resembling Cinderella’s pumpkin carriage. The carriage structure, which has wheels and leaves kids can climb up, is a longtime staple of the park, and earned it a nickname, “Pumpkin Park.” Outside of its storybook centerpiece, Pumpkin Park has a covered pavilion, a playground and a walking trail, making it a popular place to unwind and enjoy a day of outdoor fun with family. Closer to the mountains is Olympus Hills Park, which has paved walking pathways and athletic courts facing snow-capped mountains. Millcreek Canyon is a popular hiking area nearby; people can hike through several trails in the nearby mountains.

Cottages, condos and large estates
From large Craftsman and contemporary builds to small bungalows and ranches, no two homes are alike in East Millcreek. Smaller homes are priced between $600,000 and $800,000, while larger mountainside properties range from $750,000 to more than $4 million. Prices vary based on renovation status, age and home size. Many houses were built between the 1930s and 1960s, but they’re well-kept and have additions like pools and large patios. Ranch-style homes and cottages tend to sit closer together, while larger houses have more acreage. “You’re usually not right on top of each other in Millcreek,” Adamson says. Most homes have manicured lawns and narrow, paved driveways leading directly to the road. Sidewalks are scarce; instead, the space is dedicated to street parking.

Join the quidditch team at Wasatch Junior High
The Granite School District serves East Millcreek students. Assigned schools depend on home address, and some children will attend Upland Terrace Elementary School and Wasatch Junior High School. Both are rated B-plus on Niche, and students at Wasatch can play sports like quidditch. “The home prices get higher the further east you go, but so do the school ratings,” says Steve Gilbert, a Realtor with Utah Real Estate who’s been selling homes for over a decade. “The schools are a major draw to this area.” Kids may advance to Olympus High, which earns an A-minus and offers internship programs for different careers, such as sports medicine, interior design and law. The University of Utah is 9 miles north, and Reid School is a private school in Millcreek that’s been around since 1987. Neighborhood churches include The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and Risen Life Church, which has in-person and live-streamed sermons on Sundays at 10:30 a.m.

What’s happening on Interstate 80?
Interstate 80 is the main highway used in East Millcreek; it runs east-west and links with Interstate 15, which runs north to the center of Salt Lake City. Utah Transit Authority's TRAX light rail system has a Blue and Red Line that commuters use to get around; the Blue Line offers a direct route from downtown Salt Lake City to Draper, 19 miles south, while the Red Line runs through South Salt Lake and 6 miles north to the University of Utah. The Salt Lake International Airport is 12 miles away, and St. Mark’s Hospital is less than 2 miles away.

East Millcreek is full of locally-owned eateries, like Roots Café in the historic Baldwin Radio Factory. Lazy Day Café has a cozy, relaxed atmosphere and comforting brunch items like biscuits and gravy. El Chihuahua serves traditional Mexican dishes and drinks like the Duckie, a margarita topped with a colorful mini rubber duck. Fresh Market on South 2300 is the place to go for everyday essentials. Retailers like Harmons Grocery, Ross Dress for Less and Kohl’s are right outside the neighborhood along 3300 South.

Millcreek Common is a new, four-acre plaza in the heart of downtown. It’s a hub for community events such as seasonal ice skating and an Art Market showcasing local artists' talent.
