Maplewood
Neighborhood in Holland, Michigan
Allegan County 49423
Vintage homes and condos that span the 1900s
Most homes in Maplewood were built between the 1960s to ’80s. Ranch-style homes are by far the most common, with a few Cape Cods and bungalows as well. Homes typically stay under 2,000 square feet, with backyards big enough for a deck or outdoor patio. Condo units and smaller home are available from $225,000 to $400,000. Larger single-family homes with recent renovations can get up to $500,000 to $600,000. In general, Maplewood homes are more affordable than Holland's averages. “Closer to downtown, prices are higher,” Habsburg says. “As you start to radiate out, it generally gets less and less expensive."In the northern tip of the neighborhood, a few homes from the early 1900s offer older architecture and vintage charm. “That area between Michigan Avenue and State Street is known as the Triangle,” Habsburg says. “It’s a cool neighborhood where you can find more historic homes.”
Recreation facilities appeal to all ages
On the north side of the neighborhood, Evergreen Commons offers a fitness center, creative classes and community-based activities for people over 55. “A lot of people retire in Holland, but it’s still a community where people stay active and go outside,” says Larry Kleinheksel, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Woodland Schmidt who has lived in the city for over 70 years. For younger residents, the Maplewood Youth Complex offers three ball fields, two tennis courts and a soccer field. It’s a common spot for Little League games. The nearby Matt Urban Recreation Complex has even more outdoor options, including basketball and volleyball courts.Before-school care at Jefferson Elementary
Within the neighborhood, Maplewood Head Start serves children aged 3 to 5. Most of the neighborhood is zoned for Jefferson Elementary School, which gets a B rating from Niche. The Books & Games before-school program provides kids with a free breakfast and an hour of supervision in the morning. The building is walkable from many homes, but Jefferson is slated to be consolidated with another district elementary school by 2027. Jefferson grads move on to Holland Middle School, rated B-minus, and Holland High School, rated B-plus.Easy commutes to the hospital and Grand Rapids
Interstate 196 forms the southern boundary for the neighborhood, giving commuters easy access out of town. The major highway heads south along the Lake Michigan coastline, running 30 miles east to Grand Rapids, the largest city on this side of the state. Grand Rapids is also home to Gerald R. Ford International Airport. For trips around the city, Holland’s MAX bus has a line that runs through the neighborhood, connecting with Hope College and downtown. Maplewood also borders Holland Hospital, one of the city’s biggest employers. Occasionally, Michigan Avenue experiences some emergency vehicle noise, and Interstate 196 also brings some road noise.Short drives to several supermarkets
The highway running along the south side of Maplewood connects to two retail hubs. In the northeast corner, an Aldi, Save A Lot and Meijer make up the largest grocery store collection in Holland. In the southwest corner, a Family Fare Supermarket is surrounded by chain restaurants. A few smaller businesses pop up throughout the neighborhood, including a local coffee shop and a Mexican supermarket. Goog’s Pub and Grub, a local favorite for burgers, has a connected market that sells gourmet ingredients. However, most areas of Maplewood have no walkable retail. For a concentrated shopping district, downtown Holland is just over a mile away.
