Maplewood is an affordable option in southern Holland
Maplewood sits on the south side of Holland, halfway between downtown and the highway that runs out of the city. The neighborhood got its name from a former elementary school and still has a sense of neighborly community, with numerous parks and slow streets. “It’s a bit quieter over there and doesn’t have the same kind of charm as the city center,” says Tantzi Habsburg, an associate broker with Re/Max Lakeshore and Holland native. “But it’s a more affordable area, and it’s right by the hospital, so that brings in some doctors.”
Maplewood has several large sports complexes, including the Maplewood Recreation Complex,

Vintage homes and condos that span the 1900s
Most homes in Maplewood were built between the 1960s to ’80s. Ranch-style homes are by far the most common, with a few Cape Cods and bungalows as well. Homes typically stay under 2,000 square feet, with backyards big enough for a deck or outdoor patio. Condo units and smaller home are available from $225,000 to $400,000. Larger single-family homes with recent renovations can get up to $500,000 to $600,000. In general, Maplewood homes are more affordable than Holland's averages. “Closer to downtown, prices are higher,” Habsburg says. “As you start to radiate out, it generally gets less and less expensive."In the northern tip of the neighborhood, a few homes from the early 1900s offer older architecture and vintage charm. “That area between Michigan Avenue and State Street is known as the Triangle,” Habsburg says. “It’s a cool neighborhood where you can find more historic homes.”

Recreation facilities appeal to all ages
On the north side of the neighborhood, Evergreen Commons offers a fitness center, creative classes and community-based activities for people over 55. “A lot of people retire in Holland, but it’s still a community where people stay active and go outside,” says Larry Kleinheksel, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Woodland Schmidt who has lived in the city for over 70 years. For younger residents, the Maplewood Youth Complex offers three ball fields, two tennis courts and a soccer field. It’s a common spot for Little League games. The nearby Matt Urban Recreation Complex has even more outdoor options, including basketball and volleyball courts.

Short drives to several supermarkets
The highway running along the south side of Maplewood connects to two retail hubs. In the northeast corner, an Aldi, Save A Lot and Meijer make up the largest grocery store collection in Holland. In the southwest corner, a Family Fare Supermarket is surrounded by chain restaurants. A few smaller businesses pop up throughout the neighborhood, including a local coffee shop and a Mexican supermarket. Goog’s Pub and Grub, a local favorite for burgers, has a connected market that sells gourmet ingredients. However, most areas of Maplewood have no walkable retail. For a concentrated shopping district, downtown Holland is just over a mile away.
