A walkable neighborhood with an “infectious sense of community”
Rosa Parks Green is one of the most diverse areas of Holland. Residents could be descendants of the city’s Dutch settlers, immigrants from Latin America or refugees from Afghanistan. A working-class neighborhood since its very beginning, Rosa Parks Green also has some of the city’s most affordable homes — just a mile from downtown and the historic Hope College campus. “There are so many amenities within walking distance,” says Jake Norris, a resident and executive director of the local non-profit 3Sixty. “But what really makes us special is the people.” In recent years, 3Sixty has commissioned beautification projects and established monthly neighborhood meetings. “There’s an infectious sense of community here, and people are willing to care for each other,” Norris says. “I have a neighbor who will always clear everyone’s driveway of snow in the morning. I have another neighbor that invites me over for impromptu s’mores.”
Murals celebrate the area’s diversity
The Rosa Parks Green neighborhood is supported by 3Sixty, a locally run neighborhood organization serving several communities in Holland. 3Sixty holds monthly meetings, plans neighborhood clean-up days and works to beautify the neighborhood. A recent area of focus was Central Avenue, a major walkway into downtown that is equipped with a heated sidewalk system. The road is now lined with lawn games, murals and a vegetable garden that all residents are welcome to take from. The organization’s biggest project is Tulip City Walls, an annual event that invites artists to add new murals. “The goal of Tulip City Walls is to celebrate street art and highlight our neighborhood’s diversity,” Norris says. “Holland isn’t all about wooden shoes and tulips — there’s a diverse community that deserves to be represented here too.”

Some of Holland’s most affordable homes
Most of Rosa Parks Green’s homes were built in the early 1900s, mainly Cape Cods, bungalows and American Foursquare designs. Many have enclosed front porches and detached back garages. Fixer-uppers start at around $200,000, and newly renovated properties get up to $400,000. There are also a few condo communities. Units with just over 1,000 square feet start at $200,000, and those with 2,000 square feet can get over $425,000.
Rosa Parks Green has some of the most affordable homes this close to the city center. “People sometimes see this area as the wrong side of the tracks,” Norris says. “Which is a little ridiculous when you actually look at crime rates or you compare Holland to bigger cities. Part of what 3Sixty is doing with our mural project is fighting that perception and providing a way to celebrate our diversity.” Rosa Parks Green’s CAP Index Crime Score is 3 out of 10, less than the national average of 4. The score matches all other surrounding neighborhoods.

Mexican flavors at locally owned businesses
Although Holland was named for its Dutch heritage, it is also home to a thriving Hispanic community. “About 30% of the city’s population is Latino, so we have some really diverse food options,” says Linda Hart, the Holland Area Visitor Bureau executive director. One of the most popular spots is Mi Favorita Grocery, located at the heart of Rosa Parks Green. In addition to a selection of groceries, it serves hot to-go food, including tamales, tacos and burritos. “It’s my very favorite Mexican market,” Hart says. “I cannot praise it enough.” Rosa Parks Green is also home to Colin’s Bakery, with Mexican favorites like tres leches and pan dulce.

Hundred-year-old trees and indoor recreation venues
The namesake Rosa Parks Green is a neighborhood park with a pavilion and playground. “People have kid’s birthdays there,” says Lori Appeldoorn, a local resident and neighborhood connector with 3Sixty. “Prospect Park is much larger, and when the city bought it in 1901, there was an understanding that they would never cut down the trees.” Prospect Park has a playground and picnic tables, shaded by the branches of hundred-year-old trees.
Indoor facilities for recreation during Michigan’s cold winters, include Bam! Entertainment Center. The space has a variety of activities, including bowling, axe throwing and laser tag. Evergreen Commons is a community center for older adults, providing regular activities and fitness classes. “We have a lot of retirees in Holland, so Evergreen Commons is certainly a draw,” Norris says.

Less than a mile from Holland’s quaint downtown
Located at the heart of the city, Rosa Parks Green is about a mile from Holland’s quaint downtown and the Hope College campus. The Holland Hospital is also less than a mile away. The Macatawa Area Express, or MAX buses, have regular routes throughout the neighborhood. The rumbling of a train can be heard as it runs through the neighborhood's eastern side, connecting to the Amtrak station a few miles north. “Trains come by about four times a day,” Appeldoorn says. “There might be some traffic back-up, but it’s not really disruptive.” For larger city amenities, Grand Rapids is 30 miles away, home to major employers and the Gerald R. Ford International Airport.
