Community with Dutch flair
The Tulip Time Festival is Holland’s key event. Every May, thousands of spectators from across the globe descend on the West Michigan city to enjoy the parades, attend the carnival, taste the food and see the 50,000 raised tulip beds full of the colorful blooms that have been a community staple for nearly 100 years. While many attendees clamor along the parade routes, many residents in South Holland get an unexpected perk during the week-long festival: a prime parade route spot. “I used to live on 21st Street, and I could watch some of the parades from my front door," says Garrit DeVries, a Holland native and a Realtor with Five Star Real Estate Lakeshore. South Holland’s proximity to downtown is a big draw for many, says DeVries. Some residents take short bike rides, while others can easily walk. Homes in South Holland are newer and on larger lots than those downtown, another perk of living there.
South Holland makes it easy to go out and enjoy downtown, then come home to peace and quiet.

Walkable to downtown Holland for shopping and dining
West 8th Street is Downtown Holland’s main drag, a one-way road lined with a mix of locally-owned and national shops and restaurants, all housed in historic buildings. Among them, City Delicatessen is a favorite, a family-run deli that has been serving the area since 2010, and Sperry’s Moviehouse offers dinner with a movie in its small boutique theatre. For drinks, locals often head next door to HopCat for craft beer. Close to Lake Macatawa, Boatwerks offers New American dishes and homemade desserts on its outdoor patio overlooking the water. Residents can find dining within South Holland, too. Crust 54 is a popular pizza spot, and Russ’ serves traditional diner food in a laid-back, homey environment. Residents shop for groceries at Family Fare or nearby Aldi and Meijer. Gas stations and fast-food chains sit in shopping centers along Washington Avenue.

Many home styles to choose from
There are architectural styles to suit almost every buyer’s taste, including ranch-style, split-level and bungalow-style homes. Most have three or four bedrooms and range in price from $250,000 to $600,000. The more affordable homes tend to be older—built in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s—and in need of some updates, while the more expensive homes were built in the 1990s and 2000s and feature full renovations. A few five- and six-bedroom homes can be found scattered throughout the community, priced between $300,000 to $600,000 on average. The lawns are grassy, and residential streets are wide and quiet throughout the community, offering plenty of space for residents to walk their dogs and for kids to ride their bikes. Those looking for homes with a bit less upkeep can find two- and three-bedroom condos priced from the high $100,000s to the mid $600,000s.
