Washington Square is a walkable neighborhood with an old-fashioned feel
Washington Square, sometimes known as Westcore, is a neighborhood right in the middle of Holland. It’s far enough from downtown that locals can avoid the bustle of Holland’s summertime tourists but close enough that most of the city’s main attractions are walkable. Vintage homes start at relatively affordable prices, and a network of community organizations brings neighbors together. “This area feels like a neighborhood from the 90s,” says Jessica Naylor-Tatterson, the southside unit director of the local Boys & Girls Club. “Kids will walk over to the Minit Mart to buy candy and stay out late playing basketball in the church parking lot.”
One of the housing trends that you will find in Washington Square are enclosed porches.

Smaller vintage homes with detached garages
The Washington Square area was mainly built in the late 1800s and early 1900s, so homes have vintage details like enclosed Craftsman porches or pointy Tudor-style rooflines. Prices typically range from $200,000 to $400,000 and most floor plans stay under 1,500 square feet. Shaded sidewalks and streetlamps make the neighborhood very walkable and cars can park in detached back garages. Yards here are on the smaller side but still have enough room for a back patio or playset. "This is an area of the city where you can find more affordable starter homes, but it's still walkable to parks and city activity," says Kristen Carini, a Realtor with Carini & Associates Realty and Holland resident.

Pickleball courts and indoor pools
Moran Park is a city-wide destination thanks to its 15 pickleball and tennis courts. In 2023, the park's playground was renovated to be more inclusive, with updated play structures and a wheelchair ramp. The park is located just across the street from another city favorite, the Holland Aquatic Center. Commonly called the HAC, this facility has nine indoor pools, complete with water slides and a lazy river. There’s also a full-service fitness gym and sauna rooms. Membership to the HAC is discounted for residents of Holland and ranges from $76 per month for a family to $35 per month for seniors.

Free meals, after-school care and community events
The Southside Boys & Girls Club is right in the center of the neighborhood, within walking distance from several schools. For just $5 a year, kids can receive after-school care and summertime daycare at this community center—and the organization helps more than just its members. “We have a fridge in our lobby that is always stocked with food for anyone in the neighborhood who needs it,” Naylor-Tatterson says. “And we partner with Meet Up and Eat Up, a state-wide program to give out free meals during the summer.” The neighborhood is also supported by Westcore Neighbors, a volunteer organization that runs another local community center called Nuestra Casa, meaning “Our House.” Westcore Neighbors plans neighborhood clean-ups, block parties and holiday celebrations like Thanksgiving potlucks.

Bilingual learning at Holland Language Academy
Washington Square kids can attend Holland West Elementary School, which gets a B-plus rating from Niche. An alternative elementary option is Holland Language Academy, which is located a short walk from most homes. Holland Language Academy gets a B rating and is an English and Spanish immersion magnet school, meaning kids learn in both languages. The bilingual school is slated to be relocated outside the neighborhood in 2028 as part of a district-wide consolidation, although plans have not been finalized. Older kids are zoned for Holland Middle, rated B-minus, and Holland High, rated B-plus.

Local businesses form a small shopping center
Washington Square's small retail hub is anchored by Washington Square Minit Mart, which has a vintage mint-green exterior and sells grocery essentials. Surrounding the store, there are a few galleries, restaurants and barber shops. Jhomary’s Paradise offers authentic Mexican snacks and street food, and The Biscuit uses local ingredients in its from-scratch breakfast foods. “The Biscuit is one of Holland’s standout restaurants,” says Linda Hart, the executive director of Holland Area Visitor Bureau. “It’s run by local residents who wanted to invest in their community. You see that a lot here.” It doesn’t take reservations, so the wait can get long on weekend mornings.

Bike lanes and bus lines connect into downtown Holland
Downtown Holland is about 1 mile north of Washington Square and less than a mile from the waterfront boardwalk. The sidewalk-lined gridded streets make walking easy, but there is also a neighborhood bus line and marked bike lanes on major streets. Holland Hospital is directly south, conveniently located for any medical professionals. For longer trips, locals can head east to connect with Interstate 196, driving 30 miles out to Grand Rapids. The larger city has an international airport.
