Modest 19th, 20th-century homes dominate
Modest 19th- and 20th-century single-family dwellings initially built to house steel mill workers dominate this area. While constructed with a singular purpose, the houses here range in style, with American Foursquares, Cape Cods, Colonial Revivals, craftsman bungalows, Dutch Colonial Revivals and Tudor Revivals dotting the landscape. The homes also range in condition, with fixer-uppers starting below $20,000 and well-maintained or updated dwellings going for over $320,000. Those looking for attached dwellings can find two- to three-bedroom townhouses for between $55,000 and $125,000.Passive amenities at John F. Kennedy Park
Munhall residents can choose from various outdoor spaces, including John F. Kennedy Park, where paved walking paths run through rolling hills centered around a small memorial plaza. It's regularly used for community events like the annual town Easter egg hunt. Homestead Frick Park is another popular amenity, boasting lawn space dotted with American Beech trees and a fenced-in playground. For a more hands-on activity, residents can tend to beds of fresh produce and blooms in the Amity Harvest Garden on the north end of town. While not exactly a park, the Homestead Cemetery is also a community staple, housing the graves of over 10,000 people. For a time, the graveyard fell into disrepair until locals banded together to try to maintain it. It was recently purchased by the Homestead Cemetery Company, which is working to restore it.Steel Valley Schools offer a specalized program for students with dyslexia
Munhall is served by the Steel Valley School District, which offers a unique program called Connections that aims to help students with dyslexia improve their reading ability. Students can attend Park Elementary School, the No. 2 Niche standout elementary school in the Pittsburgh area, Steel Valley Middle School, and Steel Valley High School, all graded a C-plus or better on Niche. The neighborhood is also home to Propel Schools' Homestead campus. Propel Schools are public charter institutions available for free to Allegheny County residents. The Carnegie Library of Homestead hosts comedy nights and ghost tours
Munhall C.A.R.E.S. is a neighborhood organization working to enrich the community through service and events, such as regular clean-up days and seasonal Main Street Market Nights. The Carnegie Library of Homestead also regularly hosts events, like comedy nights in its music hall and ghost tours throughout the castle-like structure. The library is "turning 125 years old this year and has been a big part of the community," says Kubincanek. It has served the community for over a century, offering residents access to thousands of books and resources, an indoor swimming pool and an exercise facility. Munhall is also about 3 miles from the Kennywood amusement park, which hosts a Phantom Fright Night in the fall, filling the space with haunted houses and actors dressed as creatures of the night.PRT buses run through town
While Munhall has several walkable areas, it's mainly car-dependent. However, public transit is readily available, with Pittsburgh Regional Transit buses picking up along Main and West Streets and dropping off in Downtown Pittsburgh, about 8 miles away. To travel internationally, residents can head about 26 miles west on nearby U.S. Interstate Highway 376 to Pittsburgh International Airport.Shopping and dining at The Waterfront shopping mall
Residents can enjoy shopping and dining in Munhall's two distinct shopping districts. Red brick Colonial-style buildings and single-family homes converted into commercial spaces sit along Main Street, where residents can find a few small businesses and nearly a dozen local eateries. Some local favorites include Pizza Burgh, known for its unique Pierogie-topped pies, and Stoney's Tacos & Burritos, which offers traditional Mexican cuisines like birria tacos. For large retailers and chain eateries, residents can head to The Waterfront, a large outdoor shopping mall along the Monongahela River on the north end of town. Along with department stores like Target and T.J. Maxx, residents can also find grocery retailers like Giant Eagle Supermarket.
