Aliamanu-Salt Lake
High marks for Moanalua schooling system
“One of the biggest draws of Salt Lake is the Moanalua schooling system, which is one of the best schooling systems in Hawaii,” Iannaccio says. Young learners in this neighborhood can kickstart their education at either the B-rated Salt Lake Elementary School or Aliamanu Elementary School, rated B-plus. Students might then head to either Aliamanu Middle or Moanalua Middle School, both rated A-minus, the latter of which was ranked No. 4 on Niche’s 2024 “Best Public Middle Schools in Hawaii” list. For secondary students, Moanalua High School is an A-rated institution that earned the No. 6 spot on Niche’s 2024 “Best Public High Schools in Hawaii” rankings.Go for a swim at Salt Lake District Park
Bordering Salt Lake is the Moanalua Valley area; according to Iannaccio, locals often hike the Moanalua Valley Trail and an assortment of other trails along the valley’s ridge, some of which include Tripler Ridge Trail and Aiea Ridge Trail. “One of the biggest recreation spots is the Honolulu Country Club, but it’s a private establishment,” Iannaccio says. “There’s also Hoaloha Park, though, which is beautiful.” Next to the sprawling Hoaloha Park is the Salt Lake District Park, situated adjacent to Salt Lake Elementary School and home to numerous athletic facilities, including a basketball court complex, a baseball diamond, an indoor gymnasium and an outdoor public swimming pool. Tennis enthusiasts can head to the nearby Ala Pu’umalu Community Park to practice their serve; this park also features a playground area for children, as well as additional basketball courts and baseball fields.High-rise condos and ranch-style homes
Salt Lake is primarily residential and features a mix of high-rise condominium complexes and single-family homes. “It’s kind of like its own little concrete jungle outside of the downtown area,” Iannaccio says. “A lot of the high-rises are currently going through renovations, like updating the piping.” Contemporary and mid-century ranch-style homes line planned residential roads that wind through the hill topography of the neighborhood; many of these dwellings feature wood frame construction and Mediterranean flourishes, such as terracotta tiled roofs and stucco facades. A large portion of single-family homes are located in Foster Village, a sprawling residential community, and Aliamanu, a private military reservation in the middle of the neighborhood. Condo units here tend to range in price between $300,000 and $600,000, whereas single-family homes typically cost significantly more, starting around $1 million and going up to around $1.5 million.Grocery options at Salt Lake Shopping Center
“Residents here have the convenience of some shopping centers and strip malls,” Iannaccio says, also pointing out that the Navy Exchange Mall, home to the Pearl Harbor commissary and several dining chains, is a popular spot for locals and especially military families. Residents can also head to Salt Lake Shopping Center to do their weekly grocery shopping at Safeway or enjoy Korean barbecue at Soon’s Kalbi. There’s also the nearby Moanalua Shopping Center, which features a range of chain restaurants and some local dining options, such as Loco Moco Drive Inn, which serves classic Hawaiian cuisine, and Koa Pancake House, a well-known laid-back breakfast spot. For household goods and other basic necessities, residents also have proximity to Target and Home Depot.Turn down the temperature at Ice Palace Hawaii
Although Hawaii is known for its tropical climate and balmy weather, Salt Lake residents can still get a taste of winter chill at the Ice Palace, a popular public ice-skating rink and host to several hockey leagues and figure skating competitions. On Saturday mornings, locals flock to the Salt Lake Municipal Lot for the People’s Open Market, which features a range of fresh produce and fish.Proximity to major Daniel K. Inouye International Airport
Just across Hawaii Route 92 is the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, the state’s largest airport, which offers both domestic and international flights, as well as interisland airlines. Commuters can easily hop onto Route 92 itself for an approximately 7-mile drive to Honolulu’s downtown area; the opposite side of the neighborhood is bordered by the Moanalua Freeway, another major thoroughfare. The City and County of Honolulu operate public bus service via TheBus, which has multiple routes and stops throughout Salt Lake.
