Kalihi Valley
Steep roofs and boxy shapes evoke ancient Hawaii and the plantation era
Houses in the Kalihi Valley are older and tend to reflect Oahu’s multicultural heritage. “It’s mostly families and primarily residential, with houses and some condos,” Bates says. Many are two-stories with steep roofs that evoke the simple hales (houses) of ancient Hawaii. Homes with box-like shapes, which resemble the houses once built for sugar plantation workers, are also common. These historic features help to disperse breezes and keep properties cool. Most homes are packed tightly together near the mouth of the valley, close to the Atlantic, with others dotting the valley’s rumpled slopes. Home prices typically range from $618,000 to about $1.5 million, which is lower than prices for comparable properties in the nearby neighborhoods of Nuuanu and Kamehame Heights.Locals commute to Honolulu and the Pearl Harbor-Hickam joint military base
Many locals commute from Kalihi Valley. “It's in a convenient location,” Bates says. “It’s close to downtown Honolulu and its close to military bases like Pearl Harbor, Hickam Air Force Base and Camp Smith.” Most residents travel by car, but three public bus routes do wind through the neighborhood. Highway 63, also known as the Likelike Highway, slices through the middle of the long valley and links Honolulu with cities to the north. Daniel K. Inouye Airport is four miles away. It’s one-stop shopping at Kam Shopping Center
Kalihi Valley isn't known for its restaurants. One popular stop, however, is the Kamehameha “Kam” Shopping Center in neighboring Liliha. It’s home to a cluster of Asian restaurants, a McDonald’s, a Starbucks and a Times Supermarket & Pharmacy. Deeper in the valley locals stop for Mexican at Alejandro’s Tacos for tacos, burritos and horchatas. All ages enjoy the Olympic-sized pool at Kalihi Valley District Park
Locals swim laps and toddlers take swim classes at the Olympic-sized outdoor pool at Kalihi Valley District Park, a busy recreational hub tucked behind the Honolulu/Kalihi Police Station. Families will also find volleyball courts, tennis courts, basketball courts and a baseball field. Kids and tweens can join the Seasonal Summer Fun program at Fern Community Park. This day camp is part of an island-wide initiative started in 1944 to keep local kids busy during WWII. Activities focus on the development of leadership and interpersonal skills.Juniors and seniors select a career-oriented path at Farrington High

Chozen-ji is a Rinzai Zen Buddhist temple and martial arts dojo, or training center, deep in the Kalihi Valley. Established more than 50 years ago, the temple is not open for recreational visits. It does open, however, for an art show and sale in early November. This annual event features ceramics, calligraphy and other works created by its priests and students.
Eating local at Roots Cafe
Native Hawaiians have a strong sense of aloha aina, which is a deep love and respect for the land. One organization that works hard to support this concept is Kokua Kalihi Valley (KKV), which operates a local health network that provides medical care and wellness guidance. KKV also manages a food hub that sells produce, with little markup, from its gardens and other local producers. Some produce is incorporated into lunches at Roots Cafe, open Tuesdays and Thursdays inside the KKV Wellness Center.
