Kuliouou-Kalani Iki
Kuli’ou’ou Ridge Trail and Maunalua Bay Beach Park
With mountains in the neighborhood, trails are often a short walk from the house. “My favorite hikes are in that area,” Maeda says. “The Kuli’ou’ou Ridge Trail takes you to the very top of the mountains, finishing with these amazing stairs. Just when you think you’re about done, they go higher and higher.” Wiliwilinui Ridge Trail is another option on the neighborhood’s west side, and it offers similar ocean views. To the south, beaches cater to those who prefer a flatter elevation, and marine life is a common sight. Kuli’ou’ou, Maunalua and Kawaikui beach parks often feature palm trees and sand, and some homes are right on the beach. Each subdivision, too, has smaller green spaces such as Nehu Park, Kamole Mini Park and Wai’alae Neighborhood Park. Maeda says the latter is popular with pickleballers, and they have games on the weekends.Mountainside compounds and estates, sizeable lots with views of the Pacific
Kuli’ou’ou is known for its large lots and blocky multistory houses. “The east side of the island used to be all farmland,” Maeda says. “A lot of people created compounds here to raise their larger families in the 1950s, and the area is still very popular for that.” While new construction is now mixed in, homes in this easternmost subdivision are between $1.1 million and $1.9 million. Four subdivisions make up Kalani Iki, though, and it comprises the rest of the neighborhood. “A lot of mainland people buy in Kalani,” Maeda says. “It’s mostly estates, and it’s where they can get that ocean view.” Buyers here pay for square footage and shore proximity, and the highest-end properties sell between $4 million and $13 million. Some are in Loa Ridge, a gated community. However, most properties are between $1.3 million and $3 million. All As for Hawaii Department of Education schools
Students in Kuli’ou’ou can start at Koko Head Elementary, rated an A-minus by Niche. Students in Kalani-Iki can start at Aina Haina Elementary, and it gets the same rating. Both groups attend Niu Valley Middle for grades six through eight, and it scores another A-minus. For later grades, Kuli students attend Henry J. Kaiser High, and Niche gives it an A; Kalani students attend Kalani High, and Niche gives it an A-minus. Both schools rank in the website’s top 10 for best public schools in Hawaii, ahead of roughly 50 others. Kalani High also has an innovation station with 3D printers, lasers and power tools fitted into a shipping container, which moves to different schools around the district. Kalani High's robotics team travels with the container and teaches STEM teachers in other schools how to use the equipment and how to adapt it to classroom use.Beastide Kitchen, Uncle Clay’s and Kahala Mall
Most restaurants and shops are on the Kalaniana’ole Highway, along the neighborhood’s south side. Beastside Kitchen has local food and live music, and some of their most popular dishes are barbecue pork belly bao and garlic umami fries. A short drive west, Uncle Clay’s House of Pure Aloha has shaved ice for especially hot days. Kahala Mall is also on the neighborhood’s west side, and it has department stores and fast food spots. Additionally, Whole Foods Market is here with organic foods. Consolidated Theatres is a local chain founded in 1917, and its Kahala location shows everything from new movies to bargain matinees.Kalaniana’ole Highway and TheBus
Kuli’ou’ou-Kalani Iki is mostly hilly, but walkers can still use the neighborhood’s sidewalks. Driving is the most common way to get around, though, and the Kalaniana’ole Highway is the main thoroughfare for this side of the island. Because this route gets a lot of through traffic, it can back up during rush hour. Honolulu’s public transportation system, TheBus, operates hourly along this highway; it stops at Kahala Mall and some of the area’s subdivisions. Downtown Honolulu is about 8 miles west of the neighborhood, and Daniel K. Inouye International Airport is about 12 miles.
