McCully-Mo’ili’ili has deep roots in Honolulu history
With college students strolling the sidewalks, kids playing baseball in the parks and lunch crowds grabbing a bite, McCully-Mo'ili'ili has an energetic urban appeal. Just minutes from downtown Honolulu and Waikiki, the neighborhood also has a unique past that informs its multicultural present. “It’s a very old neighborhood that dates back to pre-Western contact,” says Nate Gyotoku, President and Executive Director of the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii, a neighborhood hub. “It was a big area for Native Hawaiians.” Japanese immigrants arrived in the late 1800s to work Honolulu’s sugar plantations. “As the Japanese moved from the plantations,” Gyotoku says, “they settled the neighborhood.” Today, the community is a mix of students and families.

Students and families are the backbone of this high-density community
High-rise condominiums and medium-density apartment buildings are the norm across McCully-Mo’ili’ili, but there are pockets of single- and multi-family homes. Many of these houses were built within the last 20 years, some with central A/C and double-wall construction. Midcentury homes that have undergone renovation are also seen. Multi-family properties often have large carports and spacious yards. Home prices range from $900,000 for a two-bedroom house to $1.3 million for a three-bedroom ranch-style home with a three-car garage. Condos, many built in the 1970s, overlook the ocean and the city. Prices range from $88,000 for a studio to $830,000 for a three-bedroom unit.

Restaurants take a trip around the world along King Street and Kalakaua Avenue
Hungry students in this dense urban area have their pick of global restaurants, including Japanese, Thai and Middle Eastern spots. Many of them line South King Street and Kalakaua Avenue. The Japanese Cultural Center hosts weekly and annual events
The Mo'ili'ili Community Center and the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai’i are pillars of the neighborhood and offer resources for residents as well as education about the neighborhood’s past. The Japanese Cultural Center has a busy community calendar. “We do pretty much monthly craft fairs and farmers markets at the cultural center,” says Gyotoku. “The Mo’ili’ili Summer Fest centers around the tradition of Obon and honors those who have passed. It’s a huge festival the first week of July.”

Young poets are encourarged at Lunalino Elementary
Planted in 2012, the International Peace Garden at Lunalilo Elementary is a place for contemplation—and the occasional poetry reading. The school earns a B- from Niche. Extracurriculars at Washington Middle include band and a chess club. Niche rates the school a B. The weekly Bulldog Bulletin keeps families up to date about sports, student-athlete signing days, school plays and graduation night details at Kaimuku High School. Niche awards the school a B-.

Mo'ili'ili Neighborhood Park and Old Stadium Park are the primary green spaces in the community. Popular Mo'ili'ili Neighborhood Park and its baseball and softball fields were given a major refresh in the fall of 2023. Families can swim and play pickleball and basketball at McCully District Park & Pool, which also has a playground. A walking trail hugs the Ala Wai Canal in Ala Wai Community Park. Waikiki Beach is two miles south of the neighborhood.

McCully-Mo’ili’ili is a convenient basecamp for work, education and fun across greater Honolulu
McCully-Mo’ili’ili is a regional basecamp. “It’s very convenient and centrally located as far as being in Honolulu,” Gyotoko says. “You can get to Waikiki pretty easily and downtown pretty easily and the interstates.” The university is nearby too. Honolulu’s TheBus, the city’s public transit system, services the neighborhood. The community is eight miles from Daniel K. Inouye International Airport.
Buses run regularly throughout the neighborhood.
McCully-Mō'ili'ili is located just above Waikiki and minutes away from Downtown Honolulu.
